aaaaand that's precisely why I pay dumb money for my meat. by paying a premium, and only getting my meat from suppliers who treat their animals with respect and care, I make sure I don't participate in that.

In the spring of 2009, a novel influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged. It was detected first in the United States and spread quickly across the United States and the world. This new H1N1 virus contained a unique combination of influenza genes not previously identified in animals or people. This virus was designated as influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 virus. Ten years later work continues to better understand influenza, prevent disease, and prepare for the next pandemic.urces/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html

If they hadn't done it, someone else would have. The logic of industrialism and capitalism, and no penalties for the "externalities" mean that going max full power and damn the consequences is how it works. They wanted the profit, they wanted the efficiency, and so they did the logical thing when you cross out all the rest.

Now I see why pig prices have been roughly flat for 25 years minus the porcine diarrhea outbreak in 2014.

Before you say, "Have you been to a grocery store?!  I know you have not been to a grocery store!", it's true.  Pork prices aren't even averaging 50% more than they were in 1980.ommodity/lean-hogs

This is why they're cheap.  It's not mom and pop anymore.  Kind of a bummer to find out where your food comes from nowadays.

There was a musician (I'm like 98% certain it was Xavier Rudd, but I'm too lazy to look it up right now) who was driving past an American factory farm. He saw the sheer scale, then he caught a whiff, and then he became a vegetarian on the spot.

I can certainly understand why.

so, just like any other major industry, big players came in and are out competing all the inefficient operators.  Just like Ford, Boeing, Coca Cola, Walmart, or Amazon before them.  It is bad for the competition, but good for the end customer unless monopoly is allowed to take over.

Industrial agriculture has been morally and environmentally disgusting for quite some time and this is the main reason I'm glad I stopped eating meat.

I once got to talk to the actual inventor of the hog confinement system, with the slatted floors, special feed, etc. For an oral history project.

He originally concieved it on a small scale, to help a diversified family farm produce a little more efficiently, but he never anticipated what the industry did with the technology, which destroyed family farms and made those families essentially meat making sharecroppers, working for one of two or three big corporations for shiat pay, on the corporations,' terms, and unable to fight or negotiate for better deals. The small initial scale made dealing with the waste easy enough because the croland cpulc sustain the lower volume of waste produced and used for fertilizer.  The mega cafo operations make more sewage than a human city, with zero mitigation. The fumes and open lagoons  are environmental disasters on a hair trigger.

The inventor said he regretted ever coming up with it and felt like Doctor Frankenstein.

I'd say it was the corporations that took it too far in the name of almighty shareholder value, and a failure of regulations due to politics being full of greedy pigs themselves.
