2nd to Reagan again, Walt.

A really good man. I met both Mondale and Ferraro when they were campaigning in 1984. He shook my hand and asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told him a teacher and president. I remember him laughing. One down, one to go, Mr. Mondale. LOL

Lost to the second worst President in US History, behind Trump.
Never understood the utter hatred of Mondale... Reagan spent us into oblivion

Reagan told them that tax cuts paid for themselves. Basically told everyone that you could get something for nothing. Then, he biatched about how people on welfare want to get something for nothing.

JIMMY CARTER: ROCK & ROLL PRESIDENT

Carter and Mondale are/were the most decent human beings to run the Executive Branch in my lifetime. Maybe ever. We did not deserve them.

Also I just watched this documentary about Jimmy the other day. We really did not deserve him.

Making people think he died ages ago was one of Mondale's special talents.

Mondale would have been a great President. He was honest enough to tell people he needed to raise their taxes.

Unfortunately, that wasn't what voters wanted to hear at the time. But looking back... he was right.

Just as Reagan is the most over-rated POTUS in history Carter was the most under-rated.

Reagan told lies that people liked.
Carter told told them truths they hated.

Carter was an actual outside the beltway guy who wanted to really change things for the better.

He was viciously attacked by both the right and the Teddy Kennedy Dem wing of the party for this.

I honestly thought Mondale was already dead.

And you notice that they were the most honest national politicians in our lifetimes, and got their asses handed to them by the electorate that prefers to be lied to, because that is most comforting, and keeps them from facing reality.

Southerners were really keen to have one of their own as President. Then it turned out they'd rather have a slick California movie star as long as he catered to their racism.

Walter Mondale would have made a good president and we might have been spared some of the Reagan crap we're still dealing with today.

However, the reality is Walter Mondale ran a bland, underwhelming campaign, and, like Jimmy Carter, was a little too honest with the public.

It didn't help that year's breakout star at the Democratic National Convention everybody was talking about wasn't Mondale, but Mario Cuomo. That kind of overshadowed his candidacy.

As well, luck played into the 1984 campaign, and Reagan had some luck on his side. In particular the 1984 Olympics in L.A. was an "America, Fark Yeah Fest" that Reagan oversaw.

Overall there was a general mood in the country the U.S. escaped the days of "malaise" and "America held hostage," and better days had finally arrived.

I can think of quite a few more politicians I want Jimmy to outlive.

He was the first politician who really made me scratch my head in confusion.  Back when he was running against Regan he came to our high school for a campaign rally...for just the students.  Of the 350ish graduating seniors, 2/3(?) would be 18 by the election.  Seemed like a lot of work for just a couple hundred potential votes.  Good speech, he stuck around for an hour+ after just to shake hands.  I guess he had nothing else going on that afternoon.

RIP, for a politician he seemed like a decent human being...which for politicians tends to be a pretty high bar.

As a former member of the Reagan Youth, I regret that I didn't appreciate the man for what he was at the time. I can only say that I've done my best to mend my ways.

I cast my first vote for President for Ronald Reagan, and against Walter Mondale.

I've been trying to atone for it ever since, including eight consecutive votes for Democratic presidential candidates.

I'm not always a quick learner, but I learn well.

Mondale laid bare a depressing truth about the GOP that remains to this day: They love to be lied to. Even my mother admitted that she voted for Reagan because he made her feel good. These days there are tweets circulating that read, "I'd rather be lied to than be a socialist." (As if those are the only two options.)

The GOP would far rather feel good than do good. Other parties are like "Here's our health care plan and our jobs plan and our tax plan and our immigration plan and our environmental plan and our pandemic plan," and the GOP is just "USA! USA! USA!" Even some conservatives have started to notice that they don't really offer anything, which shows a level of awareness one doesn't usually see from the American right.

I was in grad school when Mondale campaigned at USC in the fall of 1984. I remember that some joker held a sign that read, "Wally and the Beaver."

I was 13 in the 1984 election, and I didn't remember anyone being enthusiastic for Mondale, so I figured Reagan would win again.

Many years later, I found a newspaper article comparing their policy positions when I was helping clean out my grandparents' house.  Looking it over, I wondered how anyone could choose Reagan when looking at that.  But I think Reagan was all charisma.

We always deserve good people, just like every kid deserves good parents. Whether or not we're smart enough to put them in power when they show up is the issue. Sadly, we haven't had that choice since 1980.

An elderly black woman just passed away at age 116, born in 1904. The new oldest American is another black woman born in 1906. Sadly, we no longer have anyone left born in a year beginning with "18" who's seen all of one century and parts of two others.

I consider Obama a close runner-up. But he was always more the stern tough love parent than the saint like do gooder of Carter. But he got re elected too.

His Presidential library is going to be a community center which is pretty cool.
