(Washington Post)   WaPo writer declares that "Game of Thrones" was the last "must-watch" pop culture phenomenon aimed exclusively at adults. I mean, it's no Tiger King or anything, but I guess if you pretend the last three seasons didn't happen I can go along with that   (washingtonpost.com) divider line

The last one ever, or just the most recent?

I'll be quite honest, I've never watched a single episode of this show. Is it really worth the time investment?

I watched a few seasons and they are good at making it binge-worthy with how they end each episode into the next, and has good character development, but it's nowhere near the GREATEST THING EVER that people pretended it to be.

Not really. It meanders a lot and has far more walking than Lord of the Rings.

If you enjoy fantasy where pretty much everyone is a bastard (some literally), then it's mostly enjoyable, at least when they were working directly from the books, and not GRRM's grease-stained notes.

Man, that's a tough question.

It started off really good but jumped the shark soon after they ran out of book material (which was the end of Season 3, I think?)

By the last season I was only watching out of a sense of completism. It was pretty ridiculous.

anything with enough gratuitous T&A is not made that way for the adults.

Still more walking. It has a farkton of walking is what I'm saying. Seasons upon seasons of walking.

You're both right. One season was the Hound walking from South to North. Took the whole season.
By the last season, they were going South to North to South in a single episode.

Yes. Don't listen to Fark. A bunch of fanboys are mad the showrunners didn't listen to them when writing the show, so they get all pissy.

It's entertaining. It's got boobs. It's got blood. Just accept it for what it is and dont over analyze. Besides...what else would you be doing anyway?

Watched a few of the big battle episodes but nothing else. Seemed like hours upon hours of dialogue with hundreds of characters. Meh.

The only part of an episode I watched, was the end of a season when a lady had to walk down the street nude, full of people yelling at her.
I had to watch it twice to make sure I understood the yelling, LOL.

Nah, they lost me with the amount of rape and the same kind of shock o' the week stuff that The Walking Dead was pulling that made it seem like the show was largely directionless and the writers didn't have an ending they were working toward. Also, the amount of walking.

This. It is really good and really entertaining. The last two seasons were less good and less entertaining but still well worth watching.

Do you like lengthy serial soap operas with too many characters to keep track of, which lots of interpersonal drama but end with no real resolution? Like Lost? Or Star Trek?

100% absolutely gold standard book adaptation show right up until they ran out of book.

And truth be told, the 8th season wasn't even that bad production or action wise, but it was rushed and cliched in a way GRRM's writing was not.

Well, I think it is still on Netflix.   I am still working through other shows, and I already know that they got some things wrong about the whole affair on who was the good guy versus the bad girl in the documentary, so... I think you and I sill have time to catch on on the Tiger King.  Probably.

Haven't you ever taken the same trip twice, once where nothing of interest happened, and once where a whole bunch of screen-worthy content occurred?

Time dilation:   when a bunch of interesting stuff happens that all needs to take place on screen, it can make it seem like it takes longer.

I'll never agree with that graphic because Hardhome was at the end of Season 5. I thought that was a much higher point than all the High Sparrow crap in 6.

The show has six great seasons one very good season and one season that started well but the wheels came off the bus to a large extent by the end. But it's still well worth watching. The fact that it didn't stick The landing doesn't take away from the fact that at its best it was a really outstanding show

Yep. It was by and large a great show. Honestly, the only season I didn't like was Season 5. Some of the storylines were way too sadistic and just were grueling to get through. We get it, these people are being tortured. I don't need over half a season of it.

So to the guy up top, ignore the usual Fark gallery that hates literally everything, it's a good show.

Season six was actually super good, ending with the battle of the bastards and winds of winter, two of the best episodes in the series.

That's because GRRM at least had some idea of how WoW will be written...he has no clue on DoS.  And he'll probably never put out another book in the series after he signed that deal with HBO.

Too bad they don't remember that it's been over 20 years since he wrote anything good...

It is too bad Fincher will probably never finish this, because it wasn't that popular.

Fantastic show imho. Lots of other great ones on other networks like Bosch, The Boys, Umbrella Academy, etc.

I've seen tons of analysis of why the last seasons failed so badly, but most of it doesn't really address much beyond the obvious stuff like "people didn't want Daenerys to go bad" and "Bran being king is super lame." To me, that barely scratches the surface of the badness.

The reason it's so bad on a fundamental level is that the mythos amounts to nothing. For the entire series, there are two major things happening...

One -- there is a massive existential threat (the White Walkers) that could be defeated, but the people of Westeros completely ignore it because their society is tearing itself apart. Everything from Robert's Rebellion onwards is a tragic fall, a steady decaying of social order as the nobles tear everything down in order to fight one another. It has the makings of a tragedy. It seems to be leading to an ending were humanity fails, everything is covered in winter, a White Walker sits on the throne, and Bran is there as the Three-Eyed Raven to just bear witness to the downfall. It does NOT feel like a story where everything can be saved at the last minute by a lone hero with a magic blade that kills the Head Zombie. But then it is, and it's horrible.

Two -- in the first two books and seasons, "magic is returning." Daenerys's eggs hatch. People find that magic that was almost extinct begins to work again. The characters have been living in a cynical, secular world where they pay lip service to paper gods, and stories about magic and mythical conquerors are for children. But magic is returning, because the true gods -- R'hllor and the Other -- have awoken, and are once again battling one another.  They are invisible, unknowable, but definitely real.  The Other is the force behind the White Walkers, and R'hllor is the force behind Daenerys and the Red Priests like Melisandre, Thoros, Moqorro, etc. These characters are capable of performing genuine miracles -- the catch is that their miraculous magic is also violent and horrible, like dragons. It seems to be leading to another potential ending, where Daenerys wins and becomes a bloody god-queen. The secular world fails because humans are squabbling creatures who can't handle freedom, and the only hope for order is absolute monarchy. It's also cynical and horrible, but in a different way.

Either of those endings would have been fulfilling. Having it end with "a city is destroyed, winter never arrives, and then the nobles become slightly more democratic, replacing their arbitrary human institution with a slightly better human institution" is.... is... it's the most flaccid, limp-dicked, anticlimactic ending ever. Pure vanilla nothingness.

Fantasy is supposed to offer some kind of grand catharsis. There's none to be found in this ending. As far as I can tell, this ending could only offer catharsis to two kinds of people -- the misogynist who thinks "yeah, women are all crazy in the end, Jon had to put that nutty broad out of her misery, too bad because she was pretty hot, LOL!"Or maybe the incel loner who somehow identifies with blank-faced Bran, the quiet kid who doesn't do anything, has no personality, but is just superior because he KNOWS everything and should therefore be put in charge of things.

Ugh. I still think that George R. R. Martin gave a fake ending to HBO so he could save the real ending for his books. Which he will probably never finish.

IT'S BAD.
