I couldn't believe he came back from that in the first place, but I'm glad that he's going out more-or-less on his terms.

Two of the last three winners of the Comeback Player of the Year retired immediately after winning it. I think the name of the award needs a little more thought.

His options, IIRC, were retire or play for Houston.

He made the right choice.

Relax guys. The Redskins front line will figure out a way to get Ryan Fitzpatrick a career-ending injury and we'll have a new guy to cheer through rehab. Give it a few weeks.

Good call, I've heard all of their masseuses are prudes and snitches.

Going off topic for just a moment, but Fitzpatrick should be in the Hall of Fame.  Except on any given day, there's only a 1 in 3 chance that his exhibit will actually be there.  Best QB to never make the playoffs or a pro-bowl.

Back on topic - good for Smith.  Sometimes it's better to just walk away.

He deserves it just for the record he has set for number of teams he has played for.

Back on topic - good for Smith to get out while he still has his health and both legs.

He chose wisely. Living *and* walking, good for him.

Couldn't believe he was on the field last year at all. Big brass balls, that's for sure.

He has nothing left to prove and I wish him the best in retirement. He's earned it.

Considering how well he played last year, I'm really surprised.

With that said, however, I'm glad he got to come back, prove he could do it, and go out on his own terms.

Why would you rename the Chad Pennington Memorial Trophy?

+1 to all of the above.

Been following Smith since his days at Utah.  Whatever you think of his QB abilities, he's a genuinely good dude who also happens to have balls made of solid brass.

As others have said, "great job Alex!"  Major kudos from me.

Surprised to see he only won it twice.  Wasn't he eligible for it at least 5 times or so?

Ironic that Alex Smith's NFL career outlasted Colin Kapernick's, the guy who replaced him in San Fran.
