Or Parler changed their App to bring it back into compliance with Apple's rules giving Apple no choice.

Apple has approved Parler's return to the iOS app store following improvements the social media company made to better detect and moderate hate speech and incitement

Isn't that their business model?

More importantly, are they suddenly going to hold Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, etc to the same standard?

I am looking forward to seeing whether Parler actually moderates their content. Because if it does, it's going to have problems since their niche are people who like saying that shiat.

Yeah it will be very interesting. I heard someone recently say the actual product for many of these companies is the moderation. If you simply let people be people the community that develops is completely unmarketable.

It's the online community corollary to Godwin's law. If you create an unlimited free speech platform it will quickly be dominated by actual Nazis

Apple have in the past revoked Facebook's (enterprise) developer certificate when it was found that Facebook where misusing it to violate Apple's privacy rules, so count me as part of team "very, very cautiously optimistic"

As terrible as those sites are, there's at least an attempt to moderate there.  Parler's response so far to hate speech and incitement has been to welcome it.

I'm curious how big the internet had to be for this to happen.

[non-binary] usenet: users provided moderation.  It worked even well after the eternal September.  Bonus fact: at least one fark filter is based on this... As far as I know, it still works.  Probably just not worth taking over.
Kuro5in: "community moderation".  Eventually overrun by trolls and shaitposters.  I suspect the trolls that took it down have gone full Nazi now, or at least the real Nazis copied their methods.

Granted, I remember at least one guy on usenet using a bunch of codewords to ask for "where are the white nationalist militias, and when will they try to overthrow the government".   But only one stuck out, out of years on the 'net (maybe he found the place.  But I'm sure if it was there it would have been much more well known than stormfront was for years).

I can't imagine that full blown nazism is all that new, and has been simply festering away in dark corners of America (see Jesus camp).  But somehow modern social media hit some sort of critical mass and was able to join the Nazis together.  And then they were able to start finding the right kind of damaged individuals and begin radicalizing them.  See gamergate.  It might have appeared laughable to claim it was about "ethics in journalism" after a week or so when the facts were available, but the point wasn't to maintain that claim.  The point was to find those people who through tribalism or pure misogyny were willing to stick to the movement in the face of said facts.  Those were the future Nazi members, and I'm sure there have been more such recruiting drives, if not as remarkably obvious.

Really?  By "moderate" do you mean the that they are reducing the amount of hate speech and not trying to steer as many people to it as possible?  I've seen some crazy derp in my youtube home page, presumably as punishment for visiting "Gun Jesus's" demonetized channel.

If you mean "reducing the speeds of a neutron to make a runaway chain reaction possible" in an atomic bomb or nuclear reactor, you might be right.

Youtube frequently features alt-right channels if you do any cursory searches for video game or movie news, and if you're unaware of who these people are before you click on the video then it gets plastered all over your home screen as recommended videos.

Or, in the case of people who like Blizzard/warcraft news, it gets plastered there anyway because of people like Asmongold being heavily associated with their franchise.

Let them come back and then swing the banhammer hard when they inevitably step out of line again. I give it less than a week.
