It's been closed for a long, long, long time.

That area of Niagara Falls is nasty, and that's saying something for a city that keeps falling on harder and harder times.  Dealers of various substances are always patrolling the area around Niagara and 19th, and it's wise not to stare at them for too long or linger too long on that corner.

If you look on Google Maps at 1926 Niagara Street, the house where five people were "displaced" from, you'll see it's a boarded-up wreck.  The image capture is from 2017; I highly doubt the place looked any better yesterday right before the fire.  Those five people were basically "displaced" from a crack house.

Yah, after looking into it a little further, I couldn't find much online as far as an internet presence (reviews, etc), so I surmised it's been closed awhile. I've been to Niagara Falls on the Canada side a bunch, but only on the NY side after a wrong turn -- never spent much time there.

Honestly, the only reason Niagara Falls on the us side exists is so Flint has someplace to look down on. It's a complete wreck of a town - there are billboards going into and coming out of Niagara that say things like "Don't trust your cocaine!". I've never seen those anywhere else in the country, not even in the heart of Meth production land.... Pic from GIS, but it's the real deal.

Former because one in 5 buildings in the Falls are abandoned.  68,000 jobs left town.  You have to know a guy who knows a guy to get a job. I know a couple who left their 7-11 jobs after they were held hostage and repeatedly robbed at gunpoint.  It truly is Mad Max there.

Pre-pandemic used to be able to get a 5 bedroom house for 450 a month.  You couldn't charge 1st, last, security cause no one had money.  Just come in and start paying rent. Now you can't find a 3 bedroom for 1000.  It's a different level of poverty up there.  In Buffalo I can tell who's homeless.  In NF everyone looks homeless.

Have been training homeless outreach workers there this year.  The agencies are just shell shocked and overwhelmed.  Prior to this year, they didn't even do outreach, just serve whoever shows up.  No Permanent Supportive Housing beds.  Just put Chronics in Rapid Rehousing for 6 months.  Then the have to wait 5 years to qualify again.

My first time helping in the Falls 2 years ago, around 19th and Falls.  Drove a block, "Hey, this is the gas station where everybody got shot." Drove a block, Hey, this is the gas station where everybody got shot." Drove a block, "Remember when everyone got shot here? Let's go on foot and see who we encounter."

Was helping a family stabilize rent, "My husband was shot in the back of the head at a poker game.  You didn't hear that?  It was in all the papers."

And in the most Falls crime ever, "I bought a condemned house and fixed it up.  When I was moving in, someone jumped in the uhaul and drove away with half my stuff."

Last summer they started adding fentanyl to coke.  People would OD crossing parking lots.  Had gotten a case of Narcan from the needle exchange in case they had to shut down due to Covid,.  Erie County had put up 70 or so homeless in the community college gym downtown, so we gave it to them.  Agencies set up laptops so they could meet with their workers, tele-health, tele-mental health, tele-housing.  Because they were concentrated, 380 people got housed that summer.
