Simu Liu is really good at disappointing his father, it seems.

I'm hyped for this. Not a fan of awkwafina but since it's not her film who cares?

I love the idea of an MCU Kung-Fu movie, the same way we got spy thriller in Winter Soldier and Space Adventure in Guardians.  At the very least, it looks better than Iron Fist.

I'm happy that The Mandarin is coming back properly too.  I really loved Kingsley's portrayal before the twist, but it will probably be nice to have a version that is less of a caricature, especially these days.

Looks good, but still getting a "filler" vibe from every post-endgame MCU project. Might not be a bad thing to let it simmer for a few years before breaking out the next epic Avengers level plot, but I wish they would at least hint at what the plan is for the overarching storyline and what they're doing with the new properties. I just can't get excited about a string of movies and TV shows that are mostly about their b-listers.

I think that's fair, and I kinda felt the same until the cameo from this past week's Falcon and Winter Soldier.

I also feel like with the MCU expanding the way it is, you're gonna see less movies with ALL THE AVENGERS, and more team-ups between a few until they're ready for another Endgame. It's gonna get messy, and it's gonna get weird, but I'm completely okay with that.

I'm picturing this as a rebuild, like we're back to Phase 1.b or something.  The Avengers were not where I was at a comic book nerd but I enjoyed the hell out of the movies.

I'm trusting Favreau and Feige to be working toward something as awesome as Infinity Wars, but they have to develop characters and backstory to do it.  There may be a few duds like Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 but oh well

That was basically the case for all of Phase 1. Thanos wasn't even hinted at until the end of the first Avengers, half of that Phase was Iron Man and Thor, who weren't exactly A-Listers to people who weren't already comics fans. It's better to think of the current moves as the second Saga of the MCU now that the Infinity Stone Saga is done, they're now establishing the new leads for the next ten years of projects.

They have been dropping tons of setup for The Young Avengers lately, though.

His father WAS Fu Manchu, but they retired that character ages ago because of the obvious Yellow Peril stereotype and frequent portrayals in cinema by white actors.

In the MCU, Shang Chi's father is The Mandarin, and not Fu Manchu. Marvel doesn't even have the rights to that character anymore, so you won't be seeing him anywhere near this. Fu Manchu has been cast into the dustbin of history.

Yeah, exactly this. The MCU figured out the way to do superheroes is not to do a superhero genre movie, but instead to do some other genre of movie with superheroes. This time, it's looking like kung fu movie and hong kong action movie. I'm stoked for it.

Personally, in addition to the kung fu awesome, I am hyped to see how they tie this back to the rest of the MCU. I'm halfway expecting Dr. Strange or Wong cameos, references to Kamar-Taj, and/or references to the fake Mandarin. Maybe a War Machine post-credit cameo?

Looking forward to this because I have a nerdy martial arts side to me that loves me my kung fu. It's hard to guess what Marvel's long term plans are for their properties/storytelling. I think the pandemic and success of limited series style runs on Disney+ may change their approach long term, which I think better suits the comic book material anyway.

And much of Phase 2, too. Iron Man 3, no Infinity plot. Ditto Cap WS. And Ant-Man.

What was there in Dark World was mostly just the post-credits scene, since the Aether wasn't really treated like an Infinity Stone through most of the movie.

it was mostly just key to GOTG1 and Age of Ultron (where some of it felt forced into place, like Thor's hot tub scene).

The dialog in that One Shot specifically calls it an "extraction". They were breaking him out to take him to the real Mandarin.

I'd like to see him fight Captain Marvel on a train...and then see Hulk pick up that train and snap it like a whip...and then see Spider-Man shoot webs at the pieces of the train as they go flying and assemble it back together on the tracks so the passengers can continue their trip like nothing happened.

Watching Kim's Convenience the easy joke was that this movie was going to find some reason for Simu Liu to lose his shirt. Looking at the trailer, they found a scene for it. Mind you, if I looked like that and had Marvel's training program, I'd be finding excuses for shirtless training montages too.

I'm kind of digging the rings being 10bracelets/armlets like this, as opposed to dinky jewels on otherwise regular rings. Gives them more presence and more sense as being alien tech (if they're still going with that angle).

Hmm.  Mandarin's rings mean Makluans.

Makluans mean...FIN FANG FOOM.  (PLEASE!?)
