When MST3K: The Movie came out, I remember feeling mighty cheesed off that Universal was throwing all of its marketing effort at supporting Boob Wire.

My third date with the future Mrs. Shaun was seeing MST3K: The Movie at one of the ten theaters that showed it the week that it opened. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary.

My friend's sister was the projectionist at the local arthouse movie theater and had some pull when it came to what films they would show. We begged her to ask the theater to get a copy. We didn't get it opening week but we were able to get it eventually. I think I saw it 6 times in theaters.

I think it's easily one of the strongest riffs of the entire run.  My only complaints are that the film was edited down for no real reason other than the people in charge wanting to get closer to an 80-minute runtime for some reason, and the host segments didn't feel quite right.  The budget for the host segments seemed so much higher than the rest of the series, plus no second Mad.  Other than that, it's easily one of my favorites of the entire run.

And my favorite riff of the movie was THE AMAZING RANDO!

I don't know if you know this, but that's what broke up the band. The reason I left the show was because of the feature. There were creative differences.

I haven't read the article yet.

I never liked that THIS ISLAND EARTH was chosen for riffing.  It, along with a half-dozen other films didn't feel like they fit the criteria "the worst we can find."  I think this really reflects the difference between how Joel and Mike look at films.

Could any film get made fun of?  Sure, but isn't the point that the films were meant to torture from their badness, not just their "B-ness?"  THIS ISLAND EARTH is a neat sci-fi film that had some aspirations and comments to make (which were the parts cut out).  The film is not the most dated, or the most inept, or the most ridiculous ever made.  I'd have liked to have seen them do a film that they couldn't do on TV, something maybe a little racier or intense.

I understand that argument, but there's a sweet spot that can be tough to find. If the movie is too bad/boring, it can be a slog to get through, even with a riff. Stuff like Horror at Party Beach, or a few of the really shiatty CGI recent Rifftrax movies like the werewolf one they did, are just bad.

Plus, for a theatrical movie, you want to get people who aren't already fans to show up. While something like Manos is a classic all-time great episode, it would be a really bad introduction to the series for someone not already on board.

Mitchell isn't an outright bad movie.  Just typical mid-70s-cop-ignores-the-rules schlock.  And it's great MST3k.  There's only so many Manos' worth making fun of

See, I'd argue that MITCHELL is below average.  There's a reason it never went to series in the first place, and would be forgotten if not for MST3K.  THIS ISLAND EARTH created an alien that became an instant icon, and it was a fairly big-budget production.

And very little is as bad in any genre as Manos.  It's made from arrogance and incompetence, that "anyone can make a movie."  I guess technically they were right.

Birdemic is great. I'm talking about some of the other modern movies in the past year or so on the site. Lycan Colony was bad to the point of not really even being fun to watch with the riffing. Birdemic was at least trying to make a good movie with a message. He just sucked at it.

One of the programs I use has a compact view mode you can turn on and off.

I sing the normal view song, every single time I turn the compact view off.

Did the article.*have* to feature Jonah Rey's imbecilic remembrances?
No, the answer is no.
HE WASN'T THERE, he wasn't any part of that.
