In water, the larger and heavier particles sink first. Without water, the smaller particles sink. This was known in geology and I believe Charles Darwin explained how worms and digging animals cause artifacts and bones to sink down to the line below which animals and worms do not go.

So where's the big mystery that this same process happens with nuts? The smaller nuts can fill spaces between the larger nuts, and when you shake the bowl, the larger nuts rise and the smaller nuts shrink because the smaller nuts don't rise through the larger nuts.

Earthquakes do the same with rocks and fossils and stuff sometimes. It takes quite a few earthquakes or quite a few badgers and rabbits to move enough earth to sort everything out by size and weight, while a flood can do this quickly, but they work in opposite directions because the physics of dry and wet are different.

Mind you, a really heavy object will sink regardless of its size and shape. Black holes for example, or neutronium would sink until they reach stasis, probably at the center of the Earth unless they are moving so fast they go right through the Earth and out the other side, which may well have happened on a couple of occasions where an objec has been tracked doing just that.

Nature is very good at sorting. That is why wind and currents sort out left shoes from right shoes that escape from containers and ships and deposit them on separate beaches.

It may explain how Life originated:  Nature may have given evolution a helping hand by sorting free-floating food, organisms and other materials and encouraging non-random processes while randomness ruled the world in other ways, encouraging mutation.

Evolution occurs where randomness and order meet to produce occasional mutations in a process characterized by a high degree of perfect replication. Then all you need is time, deep, deep time.

So it's not just politics where the biggest nuts rise to the top?  This just proves that God is a dick.

Marcus Aurelius: So it's not just politics where the biggest nuts rise to the top?  This just proves that God is a dick.

Why shouldn't he be a dick?

After all, we really don't have all that much evidence that God is a benevolent deity.  What if he's a malevolent one?

Certainly, if you read the Old Testament, it sounds like God is a real asshole.  Wiping out cities because they caught teh ghey, encouraging incest, telling people to sacrifice their own children to him, etc.  The list goes on and on.

Even Jesus could be seen as a public relations gambit.  Tell people that worshiping God is all about loving thy neighbor, turning the other cheek, etc., then turning around and setting up Islam a few hundred years later so that he could pit one group of followers against the other in endless bloody religious wars.   *THEN* splitting one of them up so he could have endless bloody religious wars even within Christendom.

Maybe Mick Jagger wasn't singing from Lucifer's perspective when he sang this:

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made

Maybe he was singing from God's perspective.

I mean, it would explain a lot.   It's said that "The Lord works in mysterious ways", usually when bad things happen, but what if that's part of his plan all along, and the other times when good stuff happens, it just happens to be benign neglect on his part?   Maybe because he was getting his violent rocks off elsewhere?

People who believe in God take it as an article of faith that God is a benevolent deity, but I think there is a better case to be made that he's actually an asshole.

This has been known for quite a while. It's how you get the ball bearing to the top of the sealed tube with sand in it.

It's been known that it happens for a long time. It looks like researchers have now observed it happening in 3d in real-ish time, which is cool. It's a bit of a stretch to say we now understand the physics behind it, though.

"why mixed nuts often see the larger Brazil nuts gather at the top. The findings could have vital impact on industries struggling with the phenomenon, such as pharmaceuticals and mining."

How are brazil nuts used in mining?

This was solved about 50 years ago.  Although now they have "proof" after a million hours of simulations on a supercomputer.

Yeah I read the headline and guessed, the smaller nuts have less surface area and naturally fit together better making them more attractive to the bottom.

He should do it Properly if He is going to do it at All.  Smite some frigging people already.  I myself could use a good smiting.  You never see it happen any more.  He is Slacking.

In one of my favorite episodes of It's Okay to be Smart, Joe Hanson referred to it as the Cheerios effect. Now I smile and think of asteroids every time I open a bag of granola.

Very much to my mom's credit, I did not learn any alternate name for Brazil nuts until I had already moved away. Calling them by the alternate name, had I known it, would have earned me a stern reproach as well.

I genuinely do not know any other name for Brazil nuts than Brazil nuts.

I do know they are not a nut though, they are a seed.
