Hey, great!  Once we have this precedent, we can go break up Big Oil, Big Pharma, the defence industry, and the telephone companies.

Go for it, red state showoff.

Looks like someone's delivery of his pocket constitution never arrived from Amazon.

Ah yes the "Google is a monopoly" trope because the only time people use edge is to download Chrome, even when Edge is using the same guts.  And I'm sure the top search on Bing is "how do I get to Google"

Well, he's destroyed ours.

But interesting stance for a Libertarian. One might say this is purely punitive.  Or, you know, more attention whoring.

Hawley has never been a libertarian. He's a dominionist.  And a reprehensible human being.

The Busting Up Big Tech Act?  The BUBTA?  Really?

Just a reminder, this douche is still a senator and al Franken resigned because of dubious, at best, pictures.

Look at the big brain on this asshole!

"'Woke Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon...'"
Why did all my dogs' ears just perk up?  It's as if someone were whistling in a range too high for me to hear.

Josh, you forgot to say they were cancelling you.  Stay on script you cadaverous, coprocephalic sociopath!

Speaking of antitrust...  He should not be trusted to be a Senator.  He should have been expelled on January 6th.

A company doesn't have to be an absolute monopoly to abuse a dominant market position... but Hawley is, nonetheless, a prick

He wants to forbid Amazon from running AWS?

Good luck with that, Josh

I'm sure this is in absolutely no way retaliation for amazon telling parlor to gtfo.

I never heard a peep from them about Wal-Mart, which has killed more than a few small businesses over the years.

Also, most of these guys never have an actual plan beyond "break up big tech".  Okay, specifically how?  What individual divisions do you want to see become separate entities that would actually solve the given problems?

The only obvious one is to break out Google Ads, but other than that, I haven't seen much specificity at all.  And as far as Facebook, the reason they keep gobbling up other companies/competition is because they keep getting approved.

I'm very antitrustful of Josh Hawley's concern.

But he loves free markets... So long as they benefit him and others exactly like him.

I'm not saying it's possible.  But in a sane world it should have happened.

At about 3 in the morning today I awoke to the sound of my cat puking up a giant hairball onto the living room carpet. Mere inches next the linoleum of the kitchen, mind you. For some inexplicable reason I thought of Josh Hawley.

2021-04-19 9:28:53 AM
I think he'd have better luck if he brought up legislation to repeal the Telecommunications Act first.

2021-04-19 9:31:04 AM
Hee Hawley says a lot of crazy shiat.

The anti-Big Tech stance is pure punishment for WaPo refusing to kiss Trump's ass and the Parler thing combined with a mandatory bit of "RWers are the Real Victims Here(tm)".

2021-04-19 9:31:52 AM
The part that hurts isn't that this has a snowball's chance of passing (it doesn't), it's that we really do need a serious look at the way gigantic financial katamaris have been rolling for decades unimpeded, but the Republican party never brings anything constructive to the table, just useless poison pills to express frustration over childish shiat. Sure, a lot of the focus of that party has been on civil rights and election reform (undoing both), but every now and then it's like they roll a strike in the wrong lane and it's farking maddening.

I know we're miles past that point, but I still wish we had two functioning political parties.

FTA: It would also ban these same companies from providing internet infrastructure and online hosting for other companies, including banning Amazon from providing cloud computing services through Amazon Web Services.

Kill AWS (and GCP and Azure, probably)? LOL, no. This Hawley fellow isn't very sharp.

2021-04-19 9:35:27 AM
Next week, Hawley will propose building a second moon.  Like antitrust, it's a simple thing.

2021-04-19 9:37:14 AM
The part about Amazon not being able to sell Amazon products makes some sense. The practice of copying existing products and then pricing the people who made them out of the marketplace is reprehensible. Then again, you'd have to word it carefully if you wanted to allow products where Amazon actually did create something innovative (Kindle, Alexa*) to be sold.

The rest of it is just him being a dickhead. Anyone got a link to more details about the ban on AWS? I'm sure that's a bucket load of stupid.

* Yeah, yeah. I know we all hate Alexa.

Big Tech could only dream of the sort of shiat the oil industry has gotten away with for half a century.

Not only do I agree he is a dominionist, I feel he is also a more effeminate combination of P.T. Barnum and Teddy Roosevelt.

Definitely a back bencher seeking attention through controversy.

That would be a hell of a precedent to set considering how many store brands are out there for various places.

Peter von Nostrand: Just a reminder, this douche is still a senator and al Franken resigned because of dubious, at best, pictures.

Al Franken resigned because Gillibrand thought he would be competition in a presidential primary, and she whipped up a frenzy in the party against people that grabbed fat rolls to pull people in for photo ops. The photo where he pretended to honk Tweeden's boobs was sophmoric, but he didn't touch her, and everyone kept their clothes on. He shouldn't have done that, but look where we are now, debating whether or not it is appropriate for 38 yr. olds to date (or pay) 18 or 17 yr. olds.
Hawley is an opportunist, trying to front ride anything he sees as a wave.

The GOP is becoming anti-business now?

Naw, they're just freaked that something that big has so much control over information.  The GOP wants to be the entity that does that.

Yeah, they love shooting their foot to spite their face.  (Yes, i know I mixed 2).

Just like their court case in Indiana to give religious freedom to deny services to people gay people had the knock-on effect of creating the church of cannabis, they can't see far enough past their one issue that they regularly will be so short sided they end up attacking things they actually like.

I love it.

Please tell me how either of those situations are Google abusing it's monopolistic position.

Is the monopoly that is big tech the biggest crisis? No. Not really. But if there is political will from the right, let's do this. Break amazon into 3-4 companies.
