Much like how fact checking negatively impacts your candidates.

Have y'all considered retooling your platform, and NOT running avowed racists, sex offenders, and the Crazy Train as your mainstream? Because that might be your problem as a party, as opposed to election law. Most people who keep losing learn to either git gud or change their stategy.

No, it is the voters who are wrong!

"It's a real sign of the threat to the health of our democracy," Miller opined. "When democracy faces risk, when democracy is imperiled, what you see happening instead is the party in power tries to change the rules of the game structurally to stay in power."

He projects really well off that huge forehead of his.

You mean like creating restrictive voting laws that selectively disenfranchise people who wouldn't vote for you?  That kind of change in the rules?

Voting rights wouldn't put democrats in power forever, but it would force the Republicans to move towards the center, and to drop all of the bigoted parts of their platform.  They would have to find other excuses for people to support giving rich people more money, other than racism, sexism, and homophobia.

2021-04-19 10:08:30 AM
The GOP can't lead anyway, Stephen. All they can do is piss, moan and riot when others try to do the hard work of crafting policy.

THIS!

So farkin' tired of republicans whining about losing elections when they won't move one farkin' inch towards the general electorate in positions.  "My way or the highway" means most folks will choose the highway.

Here in Oregon we have a long tradition of republican politicians winning statewide until the 90s derp brigade took over the GOP.  Now they push wingnut after wingnut on the electorate via the gubernatorial races, etc. then scream "tyranny" when the majority of the state tells them to fark off.

You could always try building a party around solving problems that people care about instead of, you know, stoking grievances and being dicks.

2021-04-19 10:13:45 AM
more people participating in democracy = bad.

If that is your belief, your side will end up losing in the end.

As a lifelong Democrat, I will say that putting the Democratic Party in charge forever is NOT a good thing.

But I'd be totally fine with the Republican Party never being in charge again.

2021-04-19 10:15:33 AM
But as the perpetual underdog, you'd have a massive financial support pouring in.  You just have to promise the suckers, er, donors something like 'less government'  or 'tax breaks for morons'

You can never deliver because you don't have the votes but you're out there on Fox News saying the economy is too healthy.  It's time for tax cuts.  And the dolt sees you on Fox News and sends you $25.  But your website automatically sets Dolt's donation up as repeating monthly, oh fark it, weekly and Dolt has to log in to the website, find the opt out page and opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, opt out, and opt out before he can cancel his repeating donations.  But he's a dolt so he calls the 1-800 number instead and has to yell 'representative' 10 times before he gets disconnected.

Ain't democracy a biatch, Stephen?

It's not just figures like Miller, either. Mitch McConnell spent years NOT bringing votes to the floor of the senate in an attempt to hide the agenda of the GOP. That lack of transparency is the hallmark of dictators and fascists, and needs to be changed. Make the senate more democratic, and yes, get rid of the filibuster so that we can see what the polices of the parties truly are.

I lived in Oregon for 10 years.  Loved the universal mail in voting.  Saw no issues with it.

Oregon politics was interesting -- blue all along I-5, red everywhere else, but then again, 98% of the population lives along I-5.  Rest is high desert and woods.

loved Portlands Urban growth boundary that kept urban sprawl at a minimum.  But the 7000 ft2 lots would take some getting used to.

That's not a reason to engage in voter suppression -- it's a reason to change your damned party platforms.

This is such a Bad Faith Argument  -- like cops resisting police reform on the grounds that not being able to kill with impunity is a deal-breaker because, otherwise, the job isn't safe.

Well, these wingnuts are the same ones who think the democratically held 2020 election was unAmerican and worthy of causing a terrorist coup to overthrow.  All the while waving US flags.

The bigger the flag fetish, the less they actually uphold what the flag represents.

Sitting on a 4500 sf lot with a new build in NE Dallas County; 7000 sounds palatial.

Nothing is forever.  The Democrats are quite enjoying watching the once-in-power Republicans eat each other alive as the roll toward pulling themselves down by their own bootstaps.

2021-04-19 10:28:04 AM
They say that it's obvious that Democrats are obviously stealing elections, but can't provide any serious evidence of this and their preferred policies have more to do with creating hurdles to jump through rather than actually trying to monitor for attempted fraud, so they are left with the argument "when you make voting more convenient marginal voters turn out, marginal voters skew Democratic, so we must limit the number of marginal voters because they should not be seen as legitimate."

The whole point of this American experiment of representative democracy is to force leaders to govern in ways that are generally accepted by the population.

If the people reject your ideas, you should adjust your ideas or perhaps your communication of those ideas in a way they might better understand. Either way, you're the problem, not the voters.

"...creating restrictive voting laws that selectively disenfranchise people who wouldn't vote for you?"

That's the "democracy" he speaks of when he says "our democracy" is imperiled.

He means it, but he doesn't seem to "get" that it will be replaced with something closer to an actual democracy. Not perfect - but closer. Which, of course, is why he's whining.
