I know what you mean, but I had a friend who did her first book on the meaning of fatherland to the Nazis.  She had me read a chapter for basic editing.  It was ... enlightening.  It was all about how the Nazis encouraged a very hands-on parenting style for their officers.  Like take your kids to the park at least once a week to give your wife time alone.  And tucking the kids in at night, since your wife had been with them all day and should be given some breathing space.  Splitting household chores, like washing dishes and cleaning.  Keeping nights out with the boys to a minimum and keeping the kids while the wife was having girls' night.  I'm reading it going "Huh, this sounds like a rather enlightened and progressive take on marriage and child-rearing" before I would shake my head and go "These are the farking Nazis!"

People are complicated. Good people can do terrible things. Awful people can do laudable things. You're almost never going to meet someone who is 100% all bad, or all good, for that matter. A Nazi could be a good parent. Nixon created the EPA. Mister Rogers had days where he got angry and unhappy with people. It's just human nature.

As an extreme example, Trump is notable for just how broadly terrible he is, on so many metrics, and yet he still has skills. He's a showman and a huckster, but he does those things well and can be entertaining while doing so. He knows how to fire up a crowd, tell them what they want to hear, and leave them feeling euphoric. He uses those skills for awful, destructive, selfish ends, but they are, taken completely in isolation, praiseworthy abilities. That doesn't make him less awful a human being, it just means that even he isn't pure evil.

Stopped clock is right twice a day etc.

What really blew my mind was when Adam Smith's capitalism and Lenin's communism were both founded on the same founding principle: The nobility getting land grants from the crown and charging rents to live in your own house, leading to rent-seeking kiss-up behavior from the aristocracy, instead of any attempt to produce anything worthwhile in terms of goods and services. They of course had different solutions to the problem, but I found it very interesting they both identified exactly the same hazard.

Don't worry.  Q assures us that after Donald Trump completes his undercover investigation of the Democrat pedophile rings killing billions of children per year, he will return to Washington, DC, and he will transmit an anti-election-fraud program that Barron wrote (after having painstakingly analyzed the vote-stealing software from Hunter Biden's laptop) through Obama's time machine, causing the 2020 election results to have never been anything other than the Trump landslide they clearly were.

KiltedBastich: Nixon created the EPA

Hold on there a minute, pardner. He did but didn't want to. He was under pressure from environmental groups (who he mostly ignored until they became too loud) and was looking for a way to gain public support. It was not a grand plan to do something right. it was for selfish motives.

Remember, Nixon was a mini-bunkie in that he was also a flaming narcissist. All he cared about was how he looked in the news. He was constantly having his people scan the papers on his speeches and actions.

He did end the VN war but again, it was because he wanted to be popular. If it was more popular to keep it going he would have.

China may have been his moment but we are living with those consequences today. There were no real restrictions and China kinda took over many markets before they realized what was happening. It could have been handled better but its a tad late now.

Whatever. I hated the ski nosed bastard. I guess you can tell.

If Republicans are good at anything it's controlling the narrative and working hard to revise history to suit their own needs.  For those that supported him it will go down that the four years Trump was in office was their time in the sun.  They will be tireless in concocting a narrative that the 4 years he was in office the country was never better.  And even more than that, it could have been better had it not been for the Democrats and minorities that opposed them and acted in bad faith and lawlessly.

I'm dead serious about this.  This is where they're headed.  In 2 years there is going to be a core audience of people who will not be able to be dissuaded that Trump lost the election and their worldview is formed by that.

OAN, for their efforts, will remain lucrative.  What's more dangerous is that it will be a viable business model for others because there are no consequences for their actions.

davynelson: Seriously the USA doesn't have something like sedition charges that totally make sense?

Formally, no.  We take a very hands-off approach to the press and in the past this has worked well because for the moat part "the press" weren't micro-niche focused nor did Americans support the outlets like they were their own personal charities.

I do know of groups that do go after those that advertise on places like OAN.  Generally it works best with an inflammatory statement to bring it to light and then a campaign to let the company that advertises on the network that millions who buy a product or shop at an outlet will no longer be supporting them if they continue to advertise on their network.  It has been decently effective over the years but it's not really a good long-term solution and requires consistent interaction.

What the FCC doesn't have is authoriry since they don't regulate cable.

The FCC has no authority to "pull the plug" on these guys or anyone else and that's a good thing, because if they did, Trump would used that authority to "pull the plug" on CNN, and MSNBC 4 years ago.

My friend George and I used to have long friendly debates where we solve all the world's problems over brandy.

And time and time again we some down to how the real problem is education, and that simply better public education and free college would solve pretty much everything from global warming to guns to wars.

But the catch-22 is that the education is run by people who are elected, and its in their best interests to keep the people stupid and uneducated. They want them just smart enough to flip a burger and mark a ballot, but not smart enough to understand their wages or who they are voting for.
