The problem with all this nonsense is that it's basically crying wolf. Which means it'll basically be impossible to investigate future attempts at subverting elections by anyone. It'll simply become "losing side always investigates election and wastes time, ho hum".

Unfortunately that's how everyone feels about everyone else now. Sure, I happen to relatively on the correct side of things, but the lying side is just as convinced I'm on the lying side. This is no way to run a society.

You speak treason!  The Eternal King-God Trump has ruled America for the last 10,000 years.   To speak of a "Constitution", "democracy", "elections" and the idea of other rulers in America is a lie of the Deep State.  The penalty for such treason is death!

I'm shocked.

What is the most transparent and verifiable way of voting?  What does the UN say is the gold standard?  And can the gold standard be improved upon?  Whatever the new platinum standard is, let's just do that so that nobody can ever complain again.  And there will be no doubt that the winner won, even by the insanos, since it will be the best, but even better.

Let's have fully open source software.  Paper ballots with paper trails.  Yearly verification of identity and residence, with finger printing, voice printing, anal prints, and DNA sampling.  All free to the voter.  Free easy to get ID, but make the ID mandatory.  Mandate that everybody in the country attend a session teaching them where IDs can be had.  With special one one one sessions for people who literally work 24 hours a day 7 days a week and cannot attend a session.  And for the super workers who never have free time, and yet are in poverty, give them from financial assistance.  And have a special mobile ID creation van so they can get IDs.

There, problem solved.

There have literally been numerous bills that passed congress over the past four years to improve the voting systems, and allocate federal funds for both physical and electronic security, and additional oversight; Every last one of those died on McConnell's desk, without ever being brought up for a vote in the senate.

/It's almost as if the republicans think there is a benefit if the public at large feels like election results can't be trusted.

That sounds expensive.  You're okay with raising your taxes - possibly significantly - for this?

Arizona uses all-paper ballots, with hand audits of mail-in batches chosen at random, and of precincts chosen by members of all major parties.  (Which, Arizona being Arizona, is the Democrats, the Republicans, and the Libertarians.)

Those audits showed absolutely no problems.

Not even in light of the fact that our leaders just passed a new law banning the use of private funds to run elections.  No longer can our leaders use private funds to help publicize or run an election but it's now A-OK to use private funds to pay for a recount?

Ah sweet naive Arizona Republic columnist, everyone knows the GOP are always hypocrites.

Then there is no solution to make them happy.  So the best solution, a new platinum standard in elections with super transparency, outside observers, free IDs for everybody, open source code and hardware, etc... Is the best possible solution, since the trumpers won't be happy no matter what.

Have at it.  But there should be consequences if it is found to be just more lies.

Same thing in Congress or the senate.  Keep pushing falsehoods and there should be clear actionable consequences. And don't tell
me they can just be voted out.  Generally the constituency is dumb enough to have put these morons in willingly in the first place.

2021-04-18 3:55:41 PM
Just like we saw the rise of the "America First" caucus, the purpose of this crap is to give their lies false legitimacy.

They'll claim it was fixed / rigged with zero concrete evidence. It's all to continue to push the nutjobs here into further radicalization.

The phrase "you get what you pay for" tells me the final report will be full of innuendo, conjecture, accusations, and maybe one or two instances of actual fraud, but that's it. It will be hailed as the " smoking gun", even though Lin Wood caliber of lawyers would shake their head and say there's no way they're taking something that flimsy to a court.

This will play out on Fox, OANN, RT, Hannity, Carlson, Parler, etc.

Ain't gonna change a thing. Conspiracy theorists will conspire, the rest of us will point and laugh, and we'll be as divided as we are now.

If they want a legitimate investigation, call in the Swiss. They have no dog in this fight.

goodncold: But there should be consequences

I think that's the fundamental problem here.  There haven't been any real consequences since the Civil War.  Like little kids who are never told 'no', they just keep throwing tantrums and cheating because sometimes it works and they never get significantly punished when it doesn't.

AmbassadorBooze: What is the most transparent and verifiable way of voting?

Dipping your finger in indelible dye. Takes a few weeks to fade. No way to scrub it clean without obvious marks. No need to vote in a particular location, unless you're talking about the local elections. No real need for voter rolls for big elections; if you look reasonably close to voting age, go for it. Anyone who wants to vote that badly should be able to do so.

India does this, in part because of the high rate of illiteracy. Their ballots have photos of the candidates so that you don't need to read. Their poll workers can get through 700M voters in a single day; they will go to the voter if necessary.

We have a highly troublesome and expensive system because that's how folks can cheat. I'm not saying it happens on a scale that would impact an election; it's designed to allow a loser to easily contest the election and sow doubt in the system.

OK.  Let's do that.  Make the presidential election a single vote poll (no other congress or local laws etc...) Then we do it the Indian way.  Platinum standard.

Stagger the local stuff so they can do it that way too.

Problem solved.

I think the bigger problem is that Trump's supporters are so willfully ignorant and go out of their way to remain so. They will believe anything put in front them, lie or truth. And if it is a lie that is then subsequently debunked they will still believe the lie. They no longer care about the truth, they only care about what they believe to be right.
