Don't see a single thing in this entire article that will actually be reducing carbon emissions whatsoever.

...a major accomplishment of the talks was "restarting the dialogue and cooperation between China and the United States on climate change issues."

Convincing China to cooperate on climate is not a hard sell, because they can see the chance to make money and grow influence around the world.  Convincing republicans to go along will be almost impossible because mid-west oil money rules all in America, even though oil is clearly on the decline, while solar is on a huge upswing.

The Chinese leaders understand that climate change could destroy their ability to feed their people.

Obama and now Kerry reminded them of this. It's not hard to bring them to the table.

I just finished the chapter in Obama's new book where he explained the 2009 climate summit in Copenhagen. The Chinese had been hiding from him for two days. Obama took his entourage and barged in on them, said here's the climate deal you'll agree to. Sign it or I go downstairs and tell the world press and the Chinese people that when the next climate disaster hits they'll know who to blame. It caused somebody on his staff to remark, that was some gangster shiat we just pulled.

I mean, it's just a matter of getting past the bluster and "'MERICA FIRST" of the Trump administration, and realize that other countries need something too, that they have to show their own people that they aren't simply caving in to the US.  Biden gets that, Trump never did.

For example, a few weeks back, trade talks between the US and China opened with China denouncing the US in stark terms, and the right-wing press glommed onto that as a sign of Biden's weakness.  But I think Biden -- and by extension, his team -- knows that China needed to do that to open things, they needed to go back to their own people and be able to show "We are standing up to the US, we will protect our own interests" before any work could get done.  That's how that happens.

Had Trump been in charge for that, he probably would have fired off a series of Tweets from the can that completely sunk things just as they began.

Yup: back in '04 the GOP publicly mocked a war hero's combat wounds and suggested he needed to give back his medals because he didn't really deserve them.

And everyone said it was the lowest point in American politics, they couldn't possibly sink any lower, they needed to be ashamed of themselves!

So, in 2004 the options were Kerry, who had served in Vietnam as a swift boat officer, and G-Dub, who sat in Alabama as an Air Guard pilot, occasionally flying over the American South to protect it from the Viet Cong (with some circumstantial evidence that he might have rarely even went to the base he was assigned to and treated it as a no-show job).

Kerry got a handful of medals for his service - and then went on to be an anti-war advocate.  G-Dub got the clap from Alabama prostitutes.  We were stuck into Iraq good and hard at that point.  So, John Kerry was a commie-simp peacenik America-hater - but he had the medals to tell anyone to go fark themselves.  G-Dub had jack and squat, plus was dumb as a box of rocks, and had declared the US couldn't care less about OBL, who had set up the 9/11 attacks, and we needed to all die for generations to take out Saddam Hussein to take Iraq's oil (and I mean that literally.  G-Dub's administration was straight-up saying the US would start the war, beat the Iraqis, and then take the oil as recompense for what we spent starting the war - plus a lot more to make the Iraqi's think twice before they dared to be invaded by us again).  So, we had a guy who had dealt with war on a visceral level who might pull us out before we took all that oil, and a guy who skipped out on make-work camo-cosplay.

The GQP response was to just slag Kerry hard for his service.  They had guys coming out of the woodwork to talk about how Kerry was a whimpering coward who did nothing.  Most of these guys had never even seen Kerry, and some had not even been in Vietnam, but they "knew in their heart of hearts, and that is more important than facts!").  Because Kerry commanded a swift boat, this is where we get the term swiftboating, for just blatantly slagging a person for their life accomplishment by claiming they never did any of it.

One of the big problem, though, was those pesky medals.  The US military doesn't just give you change to go get one out of the vending machine down at the PX.  There are reports, and witness statements, and some sort of investigation by the military before they are awarded.  Even the GQP wasn't going to openly go to war with the US military over thee military's procedures.  So, they found the most minor of Kerry's medals, a Purple Heart for a wound be received in a firefight.  It wasn't a major wound, a deep gash on his arm.  But it fell under the auspices of a Purple Heart, so Kerry got a Purple Heart (if you meet the algorithm, a Purple Heart is basically automatic).  But it was not a life-threatening injury or anything.  So, the GQP just went ahead and slagged Kerry for his Purple Heart, gaslighting that you needed to lose at least 3/4 of your body mass and only have three working internal organs to even be considered for the very rare and prestigious Purple Heart (it's the most common medal given just because of the criteria being not too hard to meet if you have someone trying to kill you on a daily basis, and any injury that needs medical attention counts).

So, now Kerry was "known" to have "fraudulently" gained the most legendarily rare medals in the known universe.  And this must mean all his other medals were fraudulent too, as he must had forced people to lie about his exploits, and probably he wasn't even in Vietnam at all, definitely not it the US military.  That made him just a draft-dodging hippie anti-American who shiat directly in the mouths of real returning Vietnam vets.  And thus, G-Dub was Ares Reborn, King for All the Ages, and Kerry was a [British cigarette] wimp.  To prove this point, many attendees wore band-aids to the Republican National Convention that had little purple heart-shaped marks on them, claiming they were just as "worthy" as Kerry, that vile lying fraudulent fraud.  And the press treated this as BSABSVR, and made it clear that a vote for Kerry was a vote for OBL, while Eternal Master Bush would lead us to Unending Victory (really they just knew that unending war meant unending column inches, while a US doing boring diplomatic shiat doesn't write lurid headlines).

So, remember that Trump was not some aberration, but a standard Republican spouting standard Republican talking points, and using standard Republican tactics.  He didn't "take over" the party - they just all turned to bow to their Perfect Messiah.

I'm not sure if you are aware or not, but people tend to not respond well to being openly slagged for not being 175% carbon-negative.  Purity is not what you want if you actually want to get things done.  Life is not a comic book, where you make a five-panel speech and the bad guys all give up in shame.  Nor is it a video game where you hit them in the glowy spot three times to totally win and have a perfect ending.  You have to make compromises.  And try to work on those to get them better over time.  I know this doesn't conform to your Purge-War Purity Crusade, but it has a better track record than summarily shooting everyone who doesn't kiss your feet and declare you the True Messiah.  Since I actully want things to get better, and not just jack myself to my unbending farkwittery, I'll take the guy who'll take 60% today and work for 70% tomorrow (and 80% the week after that, and so forth) than the guy who will scream invective and turn down 99% as "too little, too late - prepare for Beijing to bathe in nuclear fire!"

But I guess I'm just an impure dogling who needs to be killed for not worshipping you as the ultimate ubermench.  Somehow I'll find a way to cope with the shame.  Mostly by knowing I'm not you :)

Ultimately they did.  During the interval 2000-2013 they were averaging annual increases in the 10% range.  Since 2014 they've been averaging 0.9%  On a per capita basis even better, 0.3%.  So yes, they did change their behavior.  And since then they've been moving up their targets.

Note, this is only one area, which can be externally monitored, where China is going well.  In local pollution controls the best one can say is "Well, they're talking about it..."

And keep in mind, even with that huge climb in total greenhouse gas output... China is still way below the US in terms of per-capita emissions.  And both fortunately (china will never get to our levels) and unfortunately (the US won't drop to their levels) that isn't going to change any time soon.

China plays the long game, they can look a thousand years back or forward. Half of this country can't see past lunch.

China has very limited access to oil, and a tremendous need for more energy.

Phase 1 was to burn, like, all the coal.  That got them by for a while, but now they suffer from horrible pollution.

Phase 2 was to build solar manufacturing capacity, selling that to rich countries for dirt cheap.

Phase 3 is to score soft power points by "agreeing to cuts" while transitioning to cheap solar.

abc57.com: Fact Check: Does Mayor Pete have more military experience than George W. Bush
"Presidents Trump, Obama and Clinton did not serve. But George W. Bush did as a member of the Air National Guard and had two years of active duty service under his belt. However, Bush was never deployed."

thorpe: jethroe: Put it back in your pants, subby. Maybe we should be aiming higher than "competent leadership" when it comes to addressing something that maybe won't kill us all but will definitely affect our kids and their kids and likely end the possibility of continued human existence on planet Earth if we don't get past the farking TALKING ABOUT IT stage fast.

It's a hell of a step forward from 4 years of incompetent leadership. Sorry that grinds your gears.

Exactly, a tremendous amount of damage has been caused in the last 4 years and much of it isn't readily apparent yet. Let's fix what got broken and then we can try and move forward assuming we don't somehow find someone worse than Trump to elect next time.

The newest election Cycles seem to revolve around Democratic administrations spending most of their term fixing what the GOP Administration farks up.

Which is why they are building new coal plants non stop.

Look, I may be fairly woke, but this isn't necessary. It's okay to send competent people with experience.

John Kerry is such a natural statesman. He's the only person I can remember in recent history who used the word "thrice" in a non-joking manner, and it sounded perfect. He's so polished.

"Serving" in a guard unit and kept stateside away from combat because your dad, a legitimate combat veteran, was able to ensure this through his military, CIA, and political connections is draft dodging. Albeit not as egregious as your dad paying off a doctor to say you have bone spurs but still dodging. In this universe I served and have have the combat time and experience and can tell the difference between waving the flag and serving the flag.
