Philippines: Giant clam shells worth $25m seized in raid

And who, exactly, was going to buy them... and more importantly, why?

Oh no, this is one of those "grind them into dick-pills for China" things, isn't it?

Anything can be ground into a dick pill if you believe in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

They're too big and too valuable to take it to small clams court.

They are much in demand in the middle east. Especially countries like Yemen. Traditionally, owning a dagger with a handle carved from rhino horn was considered a great status symbol. With the decline of the ivory trade handles are increasingly being fashioned from giant clam shells. They are regarded in the same esteem and much less in the public eye as being illegally traded.

Nope.  Status sinks.

When I was in Okinawa, there were a lot of these shells on the shore on the north end of the island. I brought one home with me (I have no idea where it is, 30+ years later). I don't know why anybody has to kill the critters for these things.

As a kid you/re conditioned to expect certain encounters that will never happen, to wit:

Quicksand
Lava
Etc.

I'll add getting my leg trapped by a giant clam to the list.
