Meh, I enjoy Lord of the Rings Online anyway.  The game is great, the gameplay is familiar and the ambiance is pretty amazing for a 2007 game.  I love bouncing around Bree, am enjoying Minas Tirith and love the music in Rohan.

The Shire at night is as relaxing as just about anything on Earth can be.

I can't believe I've gotten away with a Hobbit Minstrel named Curlyhoward Howardandfine for a very long time. I also love the address of my home -- 2 High Road. I don't know wtf Amazon was thinking since there already is a huge online game.

/ It's still a pretty chill and fun game after all these years.

I was in Beta for LOTRO. Bought the lifetime pass and played it religiously until well into Moria, I had even won the balrogs sword yard decoration back when it was rare. It was/is a great game. I would have loved to make it to the black gate.
I just ran out of time for MMOs.

Game industry dodged a bullet there, what it does not need right now is another bottom seeker like amazon entering its market, got enough of those already.

I think the change in ownership triggered some arcane and byzantine licensing rules of the Tolkein estate and the rights came into jeopardy.

This has always been a difficult IP to work with because the estate is (rightly) very protective.

/And it's not like the estate hasn't had a precedent of working with shiatty companies before (looking at you, Games Workshop).

LOTRO is basically at endgame material for the past year or so. Got to see the wedding at Minas Tirith. Fighting the remains of evil at Minas Morgul. Now, helping out the dwarves at the Battle of the Three Peaks - Gundabad.

Supposed to get a new character class - Brawler. Not sure when that will come out.

Shocker. Amazon tried to jump right in to focus grouping and corporatizing games to death like EA, except without any sort of successful IP's to start with.

If they wanted to make a splash in to the gaming world, they should have done what everyone else is doing. Buy up smaller studios with successful games already and THEN beat them to death with middle managers and focus groups.

Good. Now cancel the show and put that money into more seasons of The Tick.

Or they could just fund awesome games that people are willing to play for, instead of trying to follow the tired mechanisms and over monetization that AAA publishers push. Ubisoft, EA, etc... Maybe don't follow that model?

The gaming studios that become big do it by having good concepts and well executed games. Just because publishers milk them off until they die, doesn't mean the publishers can make good games. In fact, it's quite clearly the opposite.

So is Amazon trying to be a publisher, trying to make games, or trying to market a game making platform? The reason they've had no success is because they have no idea. Vague concepts of all 3 without any direction.

I loved that game.  Started playing in open beta, didn't stick around too much longer after my server was shut down and members of my kinship bounced around other servers like refugees.  I have two lifetime accounts which allowed me to dual box and at one point had six raid ready toons. I don't have time to play anymore but I have fond memories.

Is it something you can play solo? To be honest, I've never got into MMORPGs because I have no interest in playing games with complete strangers, especially if there's a strong PvP component.

I played for like 5 years almost exclusively solo.  You miss out on some special drops/rewards doing solo-only...  Playing solo you can take your time and dig the beautiful scenery instead of grinding hack and slash for hours.  You can pay attention to the story.

shiat, now I need to reload LOTRO.

They're threatening to ruin it from day one by introducing GoT style sex and nudity. I hope they see sense and keep it in tune with the original books.

If there was a Middle Earth Shadows of War MMO I would be so into it I'd turn into a Ring Wraith. I can build my online empire of bardic Oruks and multiple copies of Bruz screaming about how he never wanted it, he never wanted to be Chieftain.

I always re-recruited him and made him a war captain.

Customer service is the one thing I'd fault them for. If you want back in, get started and prepare to wait. Especially if you were on a server that's been retired.

I'd strongly suspect this is more like, "Chinese requirements regarding content oversight and the like combined with growing anti-Chinese government sentiment made 'You know fark this shiat n/m' a no brainer layup."
