I hope Leonard Bernstein is proud that he wrote a song that is so beloved to people from a different hemisphere. How cool is that? Seriously.

What's more impressive is the extra fingers they grew just so they could play it.

Fan-effing-tastic.  Wonderfully performed in a concert hall by a full orchestra -- since Bernstein used to be renowned for his television specials where he'd "explain" concert music to a mass audience to further their appreciation of it, you've got to think this would have given him particular pleasure.

There's a non-zero chance my wife's violin was in there somewhere.  She knew one of the next level down music directors and donated her backup violin when things fell apart over there.  This orchestra is basically the all-star squad picked from all the local groups for events like this.

Oppressive regimes have regimens for their youth to be hyper-competitive in international culture.

Instead of copying a Western song, what are they creating?

My high school put on West Side Story when I was a junior and in the orchestra (violin).  I struggled through "Mambo" - that is a damned difficult piece.  By the time opening night rolled around, I had been reassigned to set-builder and scene roustabout, and the music director and I were both much happier.

Is that your take away any time anyone covers anything?  Here are some contemporary Venezuelan composers if you're truly interested in what they are creating. What have you created lately?
Some other of today's working composers are:
Jesús Alvarez , Mirtru Escalona Mijares, Giovanni Mendoza, Gustavo Matamoros , Álvaro Cordero, Julio D'Escriván , Beatriz Bilbao , Ricardo Lorenz-Abreu , Mercedes Otero , Jacky Schreiber, Manuel Sosa, Efraín Amaya, Arcángel Castillo, Sylvia Constantinidis, Luisa Elena Paesano , Marianela Arocha, Pedro Mauricio González.
There is a long list of younger composers that are now writing furiously for the piano, the guitar, ensembles and infinite combinations of orchestral instruments.Among the emerging talents of today's are names such as Luis Alejandro Álvarez, Leonidas De Santiago, Wilmer Flores, Tito Nava, Albert Hernández, Ryan Revoredo, Harold Vargas, Icli Zitella.

Gustavo Dudamel, the conductor, was just named musical director of the Paris Opera.  Before that, he led the Los Angeles Symphony.  He is as legit as it gets.

Seeing as this is the conductor's side gig, and his main gig has been the LA Phil for the past 15 years I'm sure this was more than an "attempt."

Young people from a Western former Spanish colony that historically use the same scales and temperment as the rest of the West manage to play a Leonard Bernstein song that's extemely popular in Latin America?

"Copying?" They are playing a work from the repertoire. That's what orchestras do.

Anyway, that was truly awesome.

Technically, they were creating the sound of music from what they were reading and creating a new listening experience. Every time a musician picks up their instrument and plays a song they are creating something new.

Not to mention this was more lively than any other production, with the musicians having fun, the horn rolling the strings standing and dancing. This was by everyone who has seen it here a new experience, so your answer to what are they creating. They are creating the video you just saw.

This year Spielberg's "West Side Story" will be in theaters. He is actually attempting to do things that the last movie didn't, his lead characters will actually sing their parts, and they will hire people of Latino descent to play the Puerto Rican's.

God forbid they use white people to play Puerto Ricans.
