That's ... quite literally what homelessness is.

The only Republican on a 5 member commission nominated him, as he was the only candidate who embodied her particular blend of ignorance, arrogance, and cruelty towards those she feels are a "burden" on society.

Well, in some places there is quite a lot of housing. It's just that no one can afford it. Homelessness is partly, perhaps largely, caused by the fact that landowners' profits are more important than guaranteeing people shelter in our society.

So, it's not that housing doesn't exist, at least in some places. It's that the combination of housing being expensive and many jobs not paying a living wage means people can't afford to live in the housing that is available.

In short, it's just another example of our style of capitalism poisoning everything.

The only thing I can kinda-sorta agree with is that homelessness is not about a housing shortage.  Well, obviously it is on an individual level.  Like, by definition.  But on a larger level, there are lots of different reasons for that and so simply making more housing available can only get you so far.  Making people able to stay in the housing and maintain themselves is harder.

Will you address how hard it is to get a job for someone without clean clothes or a resume?  How well you address the pervasive idea that they are all on drugs?  (And I wouldn't blame them a bit.  I was.) How will you help them form a peer network to keep them off the street and moving forward?  And, for a few, how do you help them through the mental issues that won't be resolved by a stable living situation?  And so on.

Because so many people don't treat the homeless as real people, it's hard to address any one thing, nevermind all the things that need to be done.  And so many programs that are promising fizzle out because they just can't do it all and get no support.

His idea seems to be to lock them all up in an asylum.  That might meet the criteria of "a roof and walls" but seems to miss the point.

Subby, Trump is no longer the President, he already did most of those things, I'm pretty sure.

So some republican LA county commissioner put him on the committee...why is this surprising?

A lack of affordable housing is effectively a lack of housing, especially on an individual level.

And I get that Pinsky's counter is that it has more to do with drug addiction and mental illness, but he's still missing that the reasons for homelessness are far, far broader than that, and most obviously also encompass poverty (if you have no money, you can't afford a home) and marginalization (a hgoh proportion of the unhoused are queer people, many of whom were thrown out of their houses, or are trans/nonbinary individuals who can't find a place to go, since many shelters won't even take them).

The only thing the unhoused have in common is not having housing, so the only effective solution is to give them homes.

There is no lack of housing.
People are just willing to let many many homes and spaces sit empty.
Because "you can't just let people mooch" is the guiding logic.
There is housing and food for everyone.

Ben Carson has the knowledge to literally separate a pair of human beings, stuck together by their heads, that got all farked up and grew into one another in utero.

He's still a dumbfark WRT anything other than his neurology wizardry.

Yeah, okay, I get that local commissions like this are mostly made up of whoever is simultaneously a local resident and possessed of the requisite free time to make the meetings.

Still, though, this guy is a radio personality whose entire hook was that he was entertaining because of what an absurd dumbass he was; people would tune in specifically to listen him be catastrophically wrong about literally everything he opened his stupid mouth about, in an amazing defiance of statistics.  Like, he should have been right about at least one thing at some point by chance alone, but, nope.  Basically it was the intellectual version of Jackass (the MTV show, not saying Drew was a jackass... though, I mean...).

Like, this guy is a clown.  Not in the idiomatic sense, I'm not insulting him.  I'm literally saying that his job is to bumble around and look (well, sound) stupid in an over-the-top way for entertainment purposes.

I'm not saying circus clowns can't also have legitimate qualifications apart from their profession, or that they're necessarily stupid... but this guy doesn't, and he is, so maybe the city should thing twice about accepting his volunteer hours on this one.

You'd think, but he's offered a mountain of evidence over a decade that proves decisively that he can't be trusted to offer a medical opinion on anything more serious than a hangnail.

/  And even then, I'd want a second opinion.

You know, he is a board-certified physician and addiction medicine specialist (or at least he used to be), so I don't get the use of the quotation marks.  Back in the old days of the Love Line radio show, he didn't use his last name because he didn't want it to seem as if he was drumming up business for himself.

All signs seem to indicate that he sold out long ago.

Being a cardiac surgeon qualifies him to perform cardiothoracic surgery. It does not in any way qualify him for anything else. It certainly does not qualify him in any way, shape or form to advise a government in regards to homelessness.

You can call it lack of access to housing, if that helps. But splitting this hair is a lot like when Republicans say, "Everyone has access to healthcare!" Not if we can't afford it, we don't.
