Hillary Clinton's 2016 team saw what the Trump campaign was unleashing a long time before it came out into the open, and they were worried that there aren't any really effective ways to respond to the craziness. There still aren't any, as the GOP is finding out the hard way.

The press couldn't figure out how to cover the craziness without being attacked, and they really hate being attacked so they kind of ignored it too.

These people were always out there, Republican politicians used to be able to get away with just saying "hey, every party has a fringe; what can we do?" (This response skipped over the fact that not every party had such a large pants-on-head crazy fringe, but they hoped you wouldn't notice that,) It seems that soon either that fringe might drive a lot of people out of the GOP or the GOP will eject that fringe. Either way, the GOP will end up a lot smaller and less effective at getting candidates elected.

The Clintons' politics are interesting. They epitomize the middle-right (sane conservatives, even if wrong) reaction to the Southern strategy and the resulting political shift.

Hillary was president of her chapter of Young Republicans back before the shift. In a sense she's a poster child for third way and neo-liberalism inside the Democratic party, which struggles to absorb and maintain a platform that includes progressives and Rockefeller era Republicans.

It isn't possible in any meaningful way. The Democratic party was colonized or diluted by fleeing Republicans who hated Nixon and evangelicals with somewhat more power than their indifference to the plight of Blacks and civil rights.

So she's (center) right, about calling the Republicans deplorables. But failed to see that in the actual left, liberal, progressive and traditional labor side of the Democratic Party, she doesn't stand all that far away from the people she's rightfully castigating. In a sense she is the visible face of the whole problem, which was why it was easy to sabotage her campaign. The Russians really didn't have to push that hard to alienate her from enough of the left to keep them at home.

One account called JesusIsMyHero even questioned if Pence is actually a Christian, as they took issue with his lack of intervention.

"Pence does not know God. He KNEW We The People were betrayed in the fraudulent 'election' and his conscience wasn't bothered a bit by that. No one close to God would have such an untroubled conscience," they wrote.

-----

There is little more quintessentially Christian than declaring anyone you hate to be "not actually a Christian." Some people say the defining characteristic of Christianity is thinking Jesus is cool or whatever, but I think the more basic definition is arguing about who gets to call themselves "Christian" and declaring everyone you don't like to be outside.

Joe Biden was that face too. He legislated far more conservatively than Hillary ever did.

I think that if Trump had actually handled COVID with any modicum of sanity, we would have been stuck with a second term of Trump. The Trumpsters are fanatical, but the Democrats were very split on Joe up until the first lockdown (during which the Democrats [purposefully] mismanaged the primary elections).

People need to be taught to recognize it and compel people who suffer this mental disease into treatment.

Certainly anyone with that disorder should not be in any position of authority and if they have children, the children need WEEKLY visits from CPS to monitor the threat-parent's abuse.

Generational churn, it's the natural outcome.  The original 'rational evil' deliberately raised the generations after them to be irrational and ignorant so they could exploit them... is it really surprising that with that as their pool of 'fresh blood' the rational evil are being replaced by crazies?

Like most things Republican, it was a short-sighted, selfish plan with no exit strategy.

that's because Xers like us thought we'd slide in the easy job market the boomers had. Then the 1982-84 recession happened. Where for the first time a college education was met by minimum wage jobs. We were trying to get our footing. Then the 1987 stock market crash happened, then another recession (1988-1992) then we tried again to get our footing then the dot com crash of 2001, then 9/11 then the 2007 crash.

The boomers dogpiled and called us slackers. The millennials face skyrocketing student debt and even less opportunity

So our generation got pretty cranky. Millennials are getting cranky too as the media is gleefully reporting them turning 40.

While returning home from southeast Asia, a pastor was swept over the rail of the ship and out to sea, where he eventually washed up on the shore of a deserted island. The island had food and resources, so he made the best of it, and two years later another ship happened along and rescued him. Before taking him away from the island, the captain came ashore to see his camp and help him collect his belongings.

Near the beach at the edge of the forest, the pastor had built three grass huts. The captain asked him why he had three buildings for just himself.

"Oh," the pastor replied, "This one is my house, where I sleep and store supplies. And that one over there is my church, where I pray to God."

"And the third one?" the captain asked.

"Ah, that one." The pastor's expression turned sour. "That's the other church on the island. I would never go there."

They were also a little blindsided by how to approach reporting a candidate's lies when the candidate didn't face any penalty with their supporters for lying. Conventionally although people expect politicians to over promise they used to expect the candidate to have some credibility.

Then Trump came along and the Republicans dropped any pretense - the press would do all this fact checking, naively expecting Trump's voters to care and not realizing his voters were in on the generation of a false narrative. So all the press did was amplify Trump's campaign.

animal color: The deplorables cannot be redeemed. They cannot be convinced. They can't be diverted. They can only be outnumbered, which is what they are. Ultimately, America will just have to wait until they are no longer a factor in the nation's politics.

As they slowly decline -and not quickly enough so the rest of us can shore up defenses against climate change and ready our society for inevitable massive refugee influx our "system"under the constitution will give a shrinking number of radical fascists living in emptying red hell States a growing amount of political power. Emptying Montana of rational people will actually increase the insanity. It's a bad system of representation, with no hope of repair because the insane minority is calling the shots.
