I think it's because it is a target for derision BECAUSE it was so commercially successful. I liked it back then, but over time I've found it to be a bit gimmicky. That may be the same as how old things sound cliche because now everybody does the thing that old thing started. So maybe it wasn't a gimmick, but it sounds like one now.

Nope, St. Anger was a turd.  It was a turd 18 years ago and it's a turd today.

None more metal.

"Dark Side Of The Spoon" is being heralded as something other than hammered shiat?
Bold move Cotton....

The only thing more disastrous than that album was the tour.  Watching Al look like a coathanger and used the sax player to cover up his obvious inability to perform for any length of time was what did it for me.  It wasn't until "From Beer to Eternity" did they get anywhere near where they were before that time.

Fair Warning is universally accepted as the best Van Halen album. Not actually metal though.

Are you questioning:

Who they are?
How they're metal?
Why they're on this list?

Wintersun's second album, Time, didn't get enough love.

Possibly because everyone had given up on it being released.

Piece of Mind was when I learned about Iron Maiden.

It came out at the time when I was starting to hang out at the local record shop.

There were debates about McBrain.

Black Sabbath - Never Say Die (1978)

Damn straight. NSD and TE take a lot of shiat because they're not as good as the first 6 Sabbath albums. You know what else isn't as good as the first 6 Sabbath albums? Every album by every other band ever. NSD is a masterpiece.

Rocka Rolla was the first Priest I ever heard, so I still have a soft spot for it, despite it sounding nothing like any of their other records. I'd also say the early Pantera records are unfairly maligned, even if I'm not the biggest fan of that band.

Early Priest is severely underrated. Rocka Rolla is sublime.

Also, St. Anger sucks. Issues sucks as well. If you had to pick an underrated Metallica album, I say the Justice for Jason album, or hell even Lulu. Lulu is better than St. Anger.

This doesn't really fit because it's more hard rock/progressive, but this was in rotation with Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin and it's inextricably linked for me.

What a shiatty greenlught and list. As usual, aside from being bad opinions ...at best half of the albums were even metal to begin with.

You all really need to learn wtf metal is.

As these things go, not as lost as you'd think.  There are six other recordings available on iTunes and Spotify.  Even Armageddon's one record is there, which is similar because the drummer is the same on both.

That being said, its not an underrated album.  the original is obviously garbage.

OK, so a couple of those bands I've never heard, but Maiden - metal, Metallica - metal, Motorhead - not metal, but so beloved by most metalheads it doesn't matter, Slayer - metal, Megadeth - metal, Sabbath - metal, Ministry - not metal, Sepultura - metal, VH - LOL, not even close, Type O Negative - never heard that band, internet say goth metal, Machine Head - never heard them, internet says 2nd wave thrash, Korn - not metal, Gojira - metal, Fear Factory, never heard, internet says groove, industrial metal. So not metal I'd guess. Rammstein is Neue Deutsche Härte. Priest - metal. AC/DC - see Motorhead. Not metal, no one cares. Crue - not metal. Trivium - metal. Morbid Angel - Metal. So my count is 10 metal, 2 beloved by metalheads, 5 for sure not metal, 3 I couldn't say for sure.

To add to your point, heavy metal = metal. It was the first metal. Just because what was heavy then isn't as heavy now doesn't make it not metal. And industrial metal = metal. And nu metal = metal. Pure industrial was before metal but basically got swallowed up by it, and none of the bands listed are pure industrial. Just because the majority of bands in a particular sub-genre may be shiat, or one just despises a sub-genre in general, that doesn't automatically reassign it to a different genre altogether.

csb: the first time I listened to Ministry was in their pre-metal days, and my buddy loved all the new wave 80s music and despised metal. Ministry was one of his favorite bands, and I didn't much care for it. Fast forward a couple years and I heard A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste (having missed Land of Rape and Honey). Whoa! Who's this? Ministry? That can't be right... holy shiat, I love this!
"Hey, Jim! Want to listen to the new Ministry?"
"They got a new album out? Sweet! Ya, let's give it a listen!"
30 seconds later, "oh fark, turn this shiat off!"
I've dug Ministry ever since, even at their worst.
