Lose an eye and an arm and eat that while on a plane at cruising altitude.

This year I'm trying out Baker Creek's blue berry tomatoes. I'm pretty sure it's the same concept.

One of our 5 tomato plants this year is an indigo rose.

Freaking heirlooms like Cherokee purple are awesome but they get too big and the wetness tends to make them split or start to rot where the folds are.

Plus my DICK HOLE relative threw out all of my tomato seeds, even though they were all in the same spot and half were labeled.

I prefer a blue sauce made with a resplendent blue tomato ... if there were such a thing, of course.

So... you know that it is just the color of the skin, right?

When you cook it, it'll turn either red or gray.

From the folks who gave you the modern maraschino cherry.

Love my heirlooms this year: green zebra, black krim, cherokee purple, chocolate sprinkle, black cherry, and two others i cant remember at the moment. Plus a few early girls...                         Difficulty: planting at 6750 ft altitude. Sun is brutal and intense during the day, 40 degree variation between night and day. Local wisdom is don't plant til after mother's day.
Any other high altitude gardeners out there?

Almost certainly. Yeah. I've had these. I've had the real authentic only in Italy not for sale to uncultured Americans ones, too. They aren't that great if you don't spend half an hour pumping up folks' expectations. And thank YOU for telling us how you have such a refined palate.

Given the color and shape of the new variety I'm betting it's closer to some of the wild types. Could be very interesting in terms of hardiness, nutrition and flavor.

They aren't really purple. It's only the way the human eye sees the light reflected from them.
Grass really isn't green either.

Heirlooms are awesome. Those are three that are always planted here... along with mortgage lifters, early girls and usually a beefsteak. Green zebras make the best salsas/sauces...

But sorry, no. I'm about as close to sea level as I can be without swimming.
A buddy that lived in Colorado always said to expect snow/plant after Memorial day. *shrug*

Purple Cherokee, brandywine, straight roma and cream sausage for us. Also trying the Colorado artichoke variety. Asparagus patch is finally harvestable, rhubarb is harvestable, and cylindra & bulls blood beets are in.

My body is going to make some colorfully smelly noise this year :)

It must really suck to act as such a sad, negative, boring and boorish, useless farkwad.

I thank the submitter for this post. Have had many great homegrown heirlooms, but bang for the buck, San Marzano plums rule the palate here. YMMV
Ciao, biatches

But do they stay purple when cooked? I recently tried to make Ube/Hawaiian Sweet Potato cupcakes. The interior of the potatoes were a rich purple. However, the frosting came out pink, the tops of the cupcakes were a bluish-purple and the interior of the cakes was green to grey-green. It was all very disappointing and most definitely did not look like this:

The color is sensitive to pH.

the green version was somehow worse. Not that a green sauce is somehow strange, but when it tastes like that sugary sweet Heinz formula it just farks with your perception.

mmm, so good hot. or cold. or in squishee form!

Hot pots, air fryers, what is the correct tortilla for my usage, does apple cider vinegar cure syphilis, why is there corn in my poop when I haven't eaten corn for 6 months, and... why doesn't my mother love me.

Wait, is this still a food thread?
