Gen X really needs more nostalgia

"The Day After" was potential current events, "99 Luftballoons" potential documentary. We came of age when the sexual revolution morphed into AIDS, and then Nancy took drugs away.

Keep your nostalgia. Not interested.

I think Gen X got shorted because boomers never shut up. Just a thought.

We grew up on nostalgia. Boomer nostalgia for the '50s and '60s, but hey.

Just finished stranger things.

I'm all good with nostalgia for now, thanks

Gen X is all that is wrong with society. They could have learned a thing or two from the Boomers, but now, they just had to have their MTV.

You're too focused on the 80s.  I was born in '75 and the early to mid 90s was the best time ever.  Best to be in college, best for music, best for lots of things.  I have heavy nostalgia for the 90s.

We like nostalgia but we want it improved on the original. Low-effort attempts, grimdark bullshiat, and cheap copies are mocked and shunned.

Now your kids with your loud music, and your Dan Fogleberg, your Zima, hula hoops and pac-man video games, don't you see? People today have attention spans that can only be measured in nanoseconds!

Nostalgia is petty bourgeois crap. Also, the second something is aggressively marketed to a target audience it becomes lame and uncool. Duh.

Yea, like we care. Just don't ask me to put any effort into it. Happy as a clam letting the Boomers and Millennials duke it out. It's not like we ever could get a word in edgewise. (At least we can't be blamed for Disco)

2021-04-16 4:30:34 PM
Didn't they try that with Ready Player One?

So someone tried to market something to gen X, and the response was nothing but complaints?

Any xennial could've told you that would happen.

2021-04-16 4:31:41 PM
Marketing fails to a lot of Gen Xrs because we watched the complete crass commercialization of everything and it worked. The best example I can give is imagine everything going on around you being Poochified ala the Simpsons. Nothing was out there that didn't seem to have the hand of some focus group and marketing campaign on it. Even the small things that may have slipped through that were grassroots or organic were quickly swooped on and over commercialized to the point of nausea. It was easier on the wallet and mind to just buy out than try to buy in to all the BS

I was born in '78 and the 90s just don't feel all that long ago. Fark, I've got a car from the 90s that's still pretty OK.

The problem with advertising to GenX is that we viscerally don't want to be advertised to.

2021-04-16 4:41:23 PM
The one movie that encapsulates the 80s I remember is Roger & Me.

I started the 80s in a middle class neighborhood in the Factory Belt, by mid decade I was in a Rust Belt small town with people being laid off and ended it in an Arizona suburb where I had to work to help pay my parents' rent.

mcsiegs: the early to mid 90s was the best time ever. Best to be in college, best for music, best for lots of things. I have heavy nostalgia for the 90s.

This I can identify more with. Computers were less expensive and faster, Linux, Windows 95 was better than 3.x at least, the internet sprung up, Doom and Quake, LucasArts was at the top of their game, Jurassic Park, Star Trek owned TV, MST3K, and on and on. SciFi and computers were the sh*t and I do have nostalgia for it even if I was raising a family and busting my ass doing it. And yes the music was good, too.

From a review of "Ready Player One":
"I had a chance to feel like the culture of my youth was the most important thing in the world.  I guess this is what a boomer feels like all the time".

The boomers were bad enough, squatting in the workplace and suppressing opportunities for advancement, being the gatekeepers of what made it to print and screen, but now X gets spitroasted by generations on each side looking for a little more action?  Just leave us alone already.

You Boomer/Y farkers have no dignity.

Okay -- I actually kind of like it when someone now chooses to rock a big hair inspired look as part of getting all done up.  The right person and the right implementation and it can be an attractive contrast to the more normal choices.

the early 90s were the best time.

why?

because i was in my early 20s and i'll never have that much health, free time, lack of responsibility and general "chill, i got this" attitude about everything (even when i shouldn't have).

it's been downhill since then. and being 50 farking sucks.

like all groups, lot of actual sub groups going on there.

I think part of the deal is a fair % of the gen x was raised on ideas like, Stick it to the man, fook the police, and know better than to believe the hype.

We got an ideological outlook that is turned off as soon as we notice you are trying to market to us.
Unlike the kids today who are all, Thank you Mr.Man Sir can i have a dollar to shill your product sir?
Nor are we like the olds from yesteryear who will perk up and get compliant if you just pay any attention to them at all.

Alex Peterson was not a character of the good example of what's right in the world, and Scott Howard ain't exactly in the cool kids crowd. Well until he becomes a werewolf then he's total rad of course.
And like Marty McFly  as outsider loser until time travle stuff fixes some of that for him.

As a functional division, GenX can remember life without the internet, millennials can't.  I was born in '78 which puts me in the weird crossover oregon trail generation, but '75 is pretty solidly GenX - they likely graduated from high school without ever sending an email or fapping to online porn

For no particular reason, here's one Uncle's band promo. 4 uncles have been stage performers. Two were in metal bands. All had long hair. At least it made being Aboriginal a little fashionable at the time.

Then the stupid bastards with their backwards hats, flannel, and buzz cuts wrecked it all.

We had the best music however especially when it comes to sheer creativity. It didnt all work out but we already know that. Anyone trying to market us something we are already aware of will be met with pure indifference. Hence the lack of serious attempts. We have forged self awareness and indifference into impregnable armor.
