Loved every member of that band and every band they were in.

Except this one.  ToD was not good.

Fun fact that most PJ/TOTD fans already know, but the B-Side to Jeremy was called Footsteps. The same tuns was also used by TOTD at about the same time. Just interesting, and not something you see a lot of.

Man, that was a melancholy album when it came out, being a tribute to Andrew Wood, and full of sad songs. Good, but sad.

Now that Cornell himself is gone, it's *really* sad. I don't think I can listen to it again.

Flappyhead: Cornell had one of the best voices in rock history.

No doubt about it. The screaming on the earlier Soungarden stuff really obscured it for me, but later it was obvious he could sing really well.

Pushing Forward Back, Say Hello to Heaven and Hunger Strike are good.

Rest of the record bored me.

I can sing just like Chris Cornell on those songs.

And then I must rest for several weeks.

This is one of those greats.

I mentioned in the Nirvana thread yesterday I found Mother Love Bone to be the right mix of style and sound for me in that era. I liked grunge and sub-pop and the stripping away of a lot of airs and glam and hair of metal at the time. Except when done right. Andrew Wood did frontman right. Wood > every other frotnman of that era across the spectrum.

Also, Alice in Chains was the best metal band of the 80s/90s.

I like that album.  The music on it is very good.

I dare say if you couldn't handle the emotional tone of it at the time, you weren't ready to leave hair metal.

I was the U2 show in Pasadena 2 days after Chris passed.  Here's how they started the show (i'm in the sea of humanity on the field.

during the show, Bono dedicatd "Runnign to Stand Still" to chris, calling him a "a beautiful lion" and noting his wife and kid were in attendance.

One of the great things about being a musician is the sort of happenstance that comes when you play out enough and meet enough people and things just seem to happen.

We were on a bill with three other tribute bands that night which were only tangentially related to what we do.  I struck up a conversation with one of the other musicians over mutual gripes and shared humor about the evening.  When he told me he did a Chris Cornell tribute I couldn't get his business card fast enough.

It took the rest of the band a few weeks to come around to the idea of this, but they did.  The first gig we ever did together the sound guy literally accosted me at the door coming in and asked "I know who your opening act is, are you going to do what I think you're going to do?"  We did and it was pretty magical.

TOTD, Mother Love Bone and PJ were my Grunge-era bands.  I could never stand Nirvana, still can't.  Seeing TOTD turn thirty is bittersweet...it means I'm getting old but it also means I'm at a point in life where I can do things like this.

Enjoy.

The simple arrangement on the studio cut is killer. The production team could have easily gotten in their own way with this song but did not. Sparse and quiet, yet has that sonic fullness that blows the roof off like a tornado.

I had to hear it literally 10-12 times in a row.  in the navy, we were on an isolated base adn every weekend there was a van trip to Eureka  CA -  for those that didn't have cars and lived on the base - and you could go watch a movie, hang out at the mall, spend the day in Eureka, wahtever, and they'd come back and pick you up at say, 6PM.

anyways.  one day our driver popped in the "TOTD" cassette and played that godamn song OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER, literally the whole godamn drive (30-40 minutes).  there were just 4-5 of us in the van and one of the gals goes, after the 3rd or 4th play "uh, excuse me, can you please put it on the radio or at least not play it again?"  the driver, a reall asshole shipmate who drew driver duty that weekend, was like, "DRIVER ALWAYS PICKS THE MUSIC."

I don't hear that song often but when i do i think of that.  Lame story, bro.

Prince.  News broke about 10-11AM, AZ time.  I was at work and a coworker goes, "bummer about Prince, huh?"  I mistook his "Prince" at prints, as if our copier was down.  I didn't process it - "Prints?  what's wrong?"

"Yeah man, no shiat.  Prince.  Unbelievable."

"......what's up with prints?"

"Dude, you didn't hear?  Prince died today."

"NOOOO farkING WAY!  ARE YOU SERIOUS???????"

i was slammed as shiat that day but when I got home, I playd a bunch of songs on my iPod and when that solo kicks in on "Pink Cashmere", one of my all time favorite songs ever, not just Prince, but EVER, i cried and cried.

You didnt have to buy any of it.  In high school and college every other person must have been filthy rich because they all had a hundred CD's in a book and also in another book in their car.

I had that CD, but a piece of shiat food and stuff thieving roommate sold it dor a buck or whatever to the record store amd still didn't pay rent. Somehow they got a bench judgement to have the rest of us pay his way.

A couple guys had daddy's lawyer whine, but I paid and moved on.

It was like $200, chump change even back then.

No yeah I was poor, but paid for my mistakes and picked up a few extra shifts.

I've had the tape for about 15 years. It was my sister's before that. It's been played in old trucks so much that it has a warped spot that plays in super slowmo for about ten seconds. Still have the others she gave me with it: soundgarden super unknown, Pearl Jam rarities. (Bootleged live stuff), and Black Sabbath.
