Ummm. duh

Just a few days ago in a call with Biden, Putin said he wanted to abide by the Minsk Protocol. Ultimately it would benefit the breakaway republics that Russia supports. Why would Russia look to break that?

NewportBarGuy: Ummm. duh

Right?
Russia has close to 100k troops in the region and the US signaled it wasn't gonna get involved and sent its battleships out of the Black Sea. IF Putin wanted to level the area, he could. He won't, but he could.

They're always "former."

2021-04-16 4:15:04 PM
They didn't do anything the first time he attacked.  NATO a joke.

People can want lots of things. And yet, circumstances, circumstances, events and events force one's hand.

I kinda get the feeling today is just before Russia miscalculates and does invade or otherwise attack Ukraine. They're not moving a bunch of soldiers and equipment over that way for no reason.

I think they're about to misjudge how much the world is going to push back. There might not be much stomach for starting a shooting war with a nuclear power - but Russia's going to regret it if their country gets itself completely cut off from world financial markets or something similar.

2021-04-16 4:16:52 PM
Except for a complicit US President to sideline a UN response. He was really hoping for that one.

This was obviously going to happen. It was apparent in 2016 when the Republican party platform changed from lethal assistance to Ukraine to appropriate assistance to Ukraine.

4 years of do nothing Republicans leaving the cupboards bare.

This general isn't saying anything new. And I agree, Putin won't do anything because the US will just shut down the access to banks.

That's it, game over.

The future isn't warfare like this, it's the ending of financial boulevards.

2021-04-16 4:18:59 PM
Ahh yes. Not at war with middle asia, now at war with east asia.

2021-04-16 4:19:12 PM
Perhaps Putin would like to fight a war on two fronts.  It's what all the great failed assholes of recent memory like to do.

2021-04-16 4:19:27 PM
"Kinetic warfare" -- he means invade, of course.

This is, of course true.

They won't. Because Biden will lock them out of the global financial markets related to the USA.

If Putin wants the Ukraine he may give up the Kremlin.

2021-04-16 4:19:54 PM
How crazy that this opportunity for a military venture pops up just as there are talks of ending a current one!

Oh, man, what will our leaders backed by weapons dealers decide to do, given that we've always been at war with Russia/Ukraine/whoever is needed to get more planes ordered?

A bit. He's also doing this for the domestic theater. Navalny made him look very weak and the numbers of the Covid dead are coming out, which are awful.

Which Biden did yesterday with the sanctions. Its still wont do shiat against Putin.

The only thing that will stop Putin is if Europe cancel nord stream 2 and they wont do that. Europe is run by putin apologists and when Merkel is gone in september, its gonna be even worse.

One of the coworkers went kinda nuts over this today, called Biden a snake that was in Chinas pocket and Trump was handling Russia just fine and you knew where you stood with Trump. I just screamed internally and rolled my eyes and said "uh huh" and went to another floor.

sure it's a lot more territory but it's a lot of work to keep it clean

something like a nice little Chinese province on the border is more fitting for his needs, I think.

Bring rainbow ice cream to work.
(Target and Walmart both sell it)

Watch your coworker have a fit about gay ice cream and hopefully get fired.

not necessarily. It is a battle of east and west (specifically NATO) at this point. If Russia becomes desperate in that regard they are going to make a move regardless who is president.

Back in 2012, I predicted that WWIII would be fought with laptops and access to financial systems. I didn't think about the first salvos being laptops and propaganda via social media like Twitter and FB, but that was the first "shots" of WWIII. It will become a hot war when financial institutions are taken down. When credit cards are unusable in Russia or by Russians, and ATMs can't be accessed by people from certain nations, that's where the battles will take place.

If he's doing it for a domestic win he'll need to be able so sell a solution. Recognition of Crimea as part of Russia? But that would be impossible for Biden.

There is a problem with people who have been in power too long. In the UK, it's about 10 years when Prime Ministers go mad from everyone agreeing with them. Any semblance of objectivity gets lost. Putin, at this point in a highly successful career, might not be playing with a full deck.

Well he didn't "attack" the first time.

"Locals" took over Crimea.

Everyone knows it's bullshiat.  But without them going in as an official force, there isn't much we can do about it without starting ww3.

The Russians have bad memories of listening to Larry Summers the last time.  If you're a Russian Cold Warrior, maybe Goldman Sachs alums aren't seen as God's viceroys the way US political 'leaders' see them.

That's some nice access you have to the SWIFT system, Russia. It'd be a shame if something happened to it.

This is the only appropriate response.  It's gonna be a tough sell to just go in with Russian insignias on the people and the hardware, instead of pretending it's locals.  Testing Biden doesn't make sense, what's he going to do, ratchet up the tension pointlessly?  Unless you got intel, this is just troop exercises.  And my money's on this being a big distraction from something else.

Meanwhile, the only real facts we have are grammar and the lack thereof.

The paper bear wouldn't like the result if the US decided to help Ukraine. The if is the question. I think they should, because appeasing a dictator doesn't work out well.

lolmao500: The world doesnt revolve around Murica.

No but Vlad really doesn't want to get into a shooting war with someone that has over-the-horizon kill capability. The Russian military is a joke when stacked up against a real opponent. There's a reason why they only ever shoot at groups that can't really shoot back at them effectively. Just getting an enemy with decent anti-aircraft / anti-vehicular missiles would be... troublesome, to put it politely. Getting into a fight with someone that could fire a missile from over-the-horizon to take out a target? Not good. They've got no real ability to project power at sea, with that joke of an aircraft carrier and the once vaunted USSR sub fleet now decrepit.

Nobody wants to go nuclear, not even Vlad. He's too concerned with his own skin. Sure, he'd order kids to go in and die for Russia trying to take over the Ukraine. On the other hand he'd never risk even a tactical nuclear strike because he would die as well in the likely escalating exchange. He'd nope out first and use it to fire up the parotitic fervor that the West sneakily did (fill_in_excuse) to try and destroy Russia but, because of his GLORIOUS genius, they failed.

Soup4Bonnie: sure it's a lot more territory but it's a lot of work to keep it clean

something like a nice little Chinese province on the border is more fitting for his needs, I think.

HA! The Chinese still buy stuff from Russia, and gave him a shiatload of money for Siberian mineral rights a few years back when he desperately needed the cash. He's in hock to them already, and they won't hesitate to pound the ever-loving fark out of Vlad if he tries that shiat. He'd better keep his deal as well, or the Chinese will ensure many unhappy problems befall him, and other Putin supporting Russians / Russian businesses in China.

Honestly, if Vlad were actually smart, he'd be more worried about becoming a Chinese vassal state more than the US or NATO. China has been using soft power for years to cement themselves over a wide area. He'll be cut off, his client states, his customers, turning to China. They're going to do the same to Russia as they've done in other countries, if he tries to renege. GLORIOUS VLADIMIR PUTIN won't last long when they tighten the noose if he objects to the Chinese demands for payment to be honored.
