Great band that is easy to overlook.

2 bassists who left and went to the Eagles.

RIP.

The lead vocal and the harmonies on this song grabbed me right away the first time I heard it. I blame them in part for my irrational love of 70s radio hits. It bookends 10CC's I'm Not In Love well when I think of certain teen romances that had played out.

This was my parents' "scene".  They graduated in '74 and their scene was SoCal country rock like Poco, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, the Byrds, etc, so I was raised on that kind of music and I still love it.  Now I'm learning about the whole Laurel Canyon scene that this was a part out of.  Poco and the Flying Burrito Brothers somehow escaped my notice over the years but now I'm getting into them.  What an exciting yet very brief and specifically localized time that was!

I pretty much abandoned rock right in the middle of a Poco concert. There was some extended instrumental break where the pedal steel player kept playing the same note. wheeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
And the crowd went wild. Every iteration grew crazier and crazier. Like a Rockford Files car chase: this could go on for awhile.

Yeah, rock didn't miss me either.

So how long has the term "Yacht Rock" been around?

I swear I never heard before this week and now it already came up twice.

But I knew Poco. I always called them "Soft Rock."

There was a longread about that posted on Fark like 6 months ago.

Nobody called it Yacht Rock while it was being written and recorded.  The term dates to sometime around 2005.

If you missed the youtube series, the Yacht Rock collection is still hilarious and quite smooth

They were country rock, but some of their stuff could be called soft rock, sure. That's where the money was.

Frequency illusion, also known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, is a cognitive bias in which, after noticing something for the first time, there is a tendency to notice it more often, leading someone to believe that it has a high frequency (a form of selection bias).

Very noticeable when you buy a new car.  All of a sudden, you see lots of cars that are the same model as your new one.

Pogo (before they had to change their name) was a country rock band. When Jim Messina left, and Paul Cotton joined, the music definitely got more ballad-heavy and commercial

Poco has a couple of songs I guess you can consider Yacht Rock but that's not where I would categorize them.

Honestly the only reason I know anything about Poco is due to the Baby Shower episode of Archer.

Judging by the band name, I'd say a little.

I saw that too, and I didn't believe it. I knew about the Poco and America album covers because I remember Phil himself telling the story on a late night talk show, probably on Conan O'Brian's Late Night version.

For me, there's Poco up to Deliverin', and Poco after. Both are fine lineups, and the bands that members left to form or join have all been great (studio & live) bands too (Loggins & Messina, Souther/Hillman/Furay, The Eagles).

Deliverin' is one of my favorite live albums.  You can tell everyone was  having a great time, and Rusty demonstrated what mastery of an instrument sounds like. Nothing held back.

I love this song.  I think Michael Bay might have directed this video; I know he did a few music videos early in his career.
