I hope they get the max, and that still isn't enough.

I talk a lot of sh*t about Americans around here, but as a Canadian citizen, I must admit:

We have our share of idiots and assholes.

We mostly keep them in Alberta, though exceptions exist.

Do many sane people want to constantly touch other peoples' hair, knowing how many very rarely wash said hair?

Yes. Curfew riots in Quebec and active government undermining of health information in Ontario by the government.

* literally they were warned in Feb about the variant spike their policies would cause in April. And the Solicitor General was on TV a week ago bragging the modelling was wrong because we had not hit 4 k daily cases (at 3.5 :/) 'like the modelling said'. We are at 5k a week later. Idiots!*

We have many pockets of 'freedumb' issues in Canada. They just have to be more polite and dog whistle more than their cousins in the states.

Issueys? Come on! Idiots, obviously.

I remember a year ago, we were all cautiously optimistic about Ford's deferral to technical authorities. Now...? Fark that asshole and his stooge Lecce.

I seethed over this display of f#cking stupidity - running a combine harvester down Ontario Street where they marched would not have been a bad option if it were not for the innocent children being hauled along by their idiot parents.

I expect to see a spike in cases from these plague rats, and I wish there was some way to punish them for it. I dont mind my tax dollars supporting universal health care, but I do mind seeing even a single penny helping folks like this. This event will cause a surge on cases and put our hospital resources on a knife's edge, they need to be penalized for it.

Whenever Torontonians get all misty-eyed about "wine country," I say "You don't actually know anyone who lives there, do you?"

Niagara is full of right wing racist loons, chief among them being Dutch Calvinist dairy farmers and greenhouse growers.

As a resident of St. Catharines who is none of those things and can safely assert that the specific demographic of which you speak is a tiny minority, I must respectfully disagree with your opinion. And while conservatives here have around equal share of the vote to liberals, the spectrum of Canadian politics is clustered so close to center that it's not as significant a point as, oh say, talking about Dems and Repubs in the US.

Now on the other hand, we have willfully-ignorant idiots in good supply regardless of party.

And great wines 😀

Citiy councilor Carrie Porter should be mayor of St C. She is the best, a nd Niagara desperately needs leadership like hers.

You're a city feller then. You need to get out more.

Spend some quality time in West Lincoln and see if you still have the same impression. Half of council is that demographic.

........plus the usual tired Canadian argument that things are worse elsewhere be it the US or Ecuador. Canada must see itself better than someone else......... oh and how is that Covid lockdown?

I work in the township of said Mayor. He's a bigot who wouldn't raise the Pride flag last June and questioned what LGBTQ+ people and BLM supporters were fighting for as both are allowed to marry. He's president of the Canadian Christian Heritage party, which is known to be racist and anti-LGBTQ+. There are many constituents in his area that fully support his idiocy. Hell, they elected a 19 year old home schooled conservative Christian idiot as MPP because they'd elect a blue painted rock as long as it was against gays and abortion.

I need to get out more... to find the small niche of people you described, who have almost zero influence over anything across the whole Niagara Region? I guess that was my point earlier: you are applying the behavior of a very small demographic across all of the Region as if we are all like that, which we are most certainly not.

Oh, and "city feller" - in a city with population 140,000 - I laughed :)

I think Canadians in general have measured themselves more often against the US than other countries, and in some respects that is still a valid yardstick ("metrestick" doesn't work), but I agree we should be comparing ourselves to other countries of similar population and GDP who are doing better instead of finding the worst examples out there and fooling ourselves into thinking we are handling the pandemic response well. And I am increasingly pissed at my leadership at both the federal and provincial levels regardless of my political affiliation - I even grudgingly applauded Doug's early response measures but he has dropped the ball big time, to the peril of our health and well being.

When I moved to Niagara from hamilton as a kid, I was acutally in culture shock at how St. cathainres looked exactly like the USA. I had never seen a downtown or suburbs ah looked like that city on this side fo the border before. The architecture, the people, the way factories were righ nex to the housing and mixed in, the building materials for rooftops and sides of houses, the absence of sidewalks on so many streets. Being from Hamilton, having lived my life going toward Toronto, I had no preparation for an American city in Canada. Nothing looked or operated the same. The people were so different, in their styles, speech, accents, the words they chose, how religion operates in daily life. It is another world in Niagara.
