Yep, my banana-avocado milk is really having an impact on Latin American culinary culture.

I sent an apology pinata, we're cool now right suramericanos?

My avocadoes most likely come from Queensland or northern  New South Wales, so I'm not too troubled.

No enojes a los sudamericanos.

I think it's a bit presumptuous to tell us what to eat and how much or little to eat in a global economy. There are no innocent bystanders in a global economy.

If my lime tree(in a pot) continues to be a success, I'm going to get an avocado tree next.

Well according to NPR 90% of all Avocados are grown in California.

So if that's the case, isn't it an American thing now?

Really gotta ramp those numbers up South America/ Mexico.

/always found it weird seeing farmers tables near the highway in Cali advertising "6 Avocados 2 dollar" (or something to that effect)

// also kinda funny seeing the signs saying "Congress approved Dustbowl" or "Is growing food wrong?"

/// you're growing water intensive crops in an area that can't support it, I don't know how to break this down for you.

For every avocado you don't eat I'll eat a bowl of guacamole with my fingers standing up staring at a clock in bliss.

Of course, his restaurant still has avocado on the menu.

Cartels are moving away from drugs and getting to the avocados. For every ton of avocados a human head is left in front of a police station

Stop eating avocados? No problem, I can't stand the things.

I am ready eating "teeny tiny" avocados, which are normal avocados that stopped growing due to weather. I am not stopping altogether.

No. I had avocado toast with fried eggs for breakfast, and it was delicious.

He suggests a guacamole alternative inspired by both Venezuelan "guasacaca" and Mayan sikil p'ak (pumpkin seed paste)...

Is that code for flipping someone off, or do you like avocados so much you get finger erections?

Axeofjudgement: Well according to NPR 90% of all Avocados are grown in California.

Not quite true. About 90% of the avocado production in the United States occurs in California, with the rest in Florida and Hawaii.

However, the U.S. generates only about 7% of the total global avocado production. Mexico produces about 34%, by comparison.

The problem is that the avocados produced here are almost exclusively the nice, expensive Haas variety - with demand spiking well beyond our capacity to produce them, Americans have increasingly purchased other varieties, and usually from Central & South American countries.

We're basically doing to avocados, now, what we did to quinoa in 2013. The resulting economic & agricultural instability was a mess in countries like Bolivia, which basically robbed their own poor to feed rich foreigners & make money.

2021-04-16 10:22:31 AM
TFA's suggestion for an alternative to guac is sikil pak.    Sikil pak is yummy, but it ain't no substitute for guac.

Those poor Millennials. Now they'll all die in 50-60 years.

"...clean drinking water is already in short supply..."  well there's your problem. Avocados probably don't need evian.

Loves some guac.

And that problem was more attributable to appetite of food consumers in the US, or those in power in Bolivia?

Good plan for avocados: addressing the relationship between cartels and agriculture in Mexico
Dumb plan for avocados: have a chef who serves avocado complain that people eat too much of it

I've never heard of guasacaca before.  I'll google some recipesOhYou idiot.

So his whole argument is don't eat avocados so that others can?
For a businessman, he seems awfully ignorant of how commodities work.

Over consumption of Tequila is stressing agave production. Stop drinking Tequila.

Aldo Camarena    He's the chef, but one letter off from waiter   You could get a running joke out of that

2021-04-16 2:33:36 PM
"If you want to do something nice for the earth today, either cut down on or entirely cut off your avocado consumption," Camarena says. "There is one sustainable way to consume avocados, and that is locally and in moderation."

Don't drive your diesel truck to Costco to buy a $5 rotisserie chicken that your ginormous offspring will eat in a day. Just a hunch that it might help more than slowing down on the avocados...

That said, I just finished eating 1/2 an avocado. Sorry, but I've eaten them before millennials existed, and will continue to do so, at an average rate of about 1-2 a week.

They can start by stopping manufacturing that pre-made guac you get in the grocery.  That crap is never good.

Then again, I'm not sure how much avocado is actually in it.

If you have not had the experience of finger erections, then you clearly have not had a good guacamole.

It was a revelation to visit the farmer's markets on the Big Island. So MANY varieties of avocados.
