"Uh... Cancer! AIDS! Transplants! COVID! shiat, did I miss anything? We're doing it because we can and want all that tiresome ethics and safety crap to be moot because we've done what we wanted to."
Not once do they explain why this experiment would do anything to answer the questions they claim to be asking. I'm wondering what happened after the 19th day of the experiment or how far they'll take it just to see what happens.

Modern humanity is planet of the apes. That's kind of the whole allegory as I saw it; the least evolved of us basically enslave humans across the world yet think themselves advanced, when in reality it just proves they're just farking slightly advanced apes doing ape shiat, even more evidenced by the submerged statue of liberty just left to rot away instead of civilly preserved as an artifact of an ancient civilization.

If I read tfa correctly, after 19 days all the embryos were dead.

I don't really understand what they hope to gain from this either.  I know people have tried to grow human tissues inside mice and pigs to create better research models for drug tests etc, so maybe this is an extension of that research.  Whole concept has always felt ethically dubious to me, but there are some things you really just can't get any better information on using animal models and non-invasive scans.

I can see why human tissues and organs are the best models for human tissues and organs, but, yeah. This is skeevy and their protesting is pretty shrill.

The original novel was a socialist text about the danger of allowing automation to replace labor without thinking through the current ownership model and modifying it appropriately. The takeover of the apes was basically a metaphor for labor being rendered irrelevant as capitalist owners (not necessarily maliciously) themselves became so obsessed with internal metrics of efficiency etc that eventually humanity and all of its values got displaced out of existence in a cultural apocalypse ending the current system, basically a "capitalism eats itself" bad future.

I mean, the backstory / mystery that gets solved in the first novel is that, I don't want to dismiss that the story itself was an awesome adventure about exploring a strange land.

Anyhow, the point is that we already got planet of the apes, mate.

Like... the thing it predicted happened, none of the people who were warned did anything to stop it even after it was clear it was happening, and surprisingly it even came with an actual physical apocalypse instead of just a cultural one. It's done, the book nailed it, it's basically a historical metaphor instead of fiction now.

So have a nice day i guess.

No, it wasn't.  Using apes as labor doesn't count as "automation", and that's basically what happened in both the novel and in the film series.

You'd be better off saying it was about the rise of the proletariat, in the form of worker apes who rebel against their bourgeoisie human masters.  At least that makes more sense if you're going to frame the story in a socialist context.

I mean, geek tab thread so not gonna put on the minor degree in English hat here, but while what I posted includes my own (albeit fairly grounded) assessment of real world history, the part about planet of the apes being a socialist text and the nature of the metaphor isn't me reading into subtext, it's actual text.

Like, the series was popular within the author's lifetime and interviews were had explicitly going over what he meant, in addition to the book being... not super subtle about it.

As far as apes not literally being machines (or artificial at all in the book, actually, they were just literal trained apes sans mad science) I don't really know how to go about breaking down what a metaphor is for someone who can't grasp that concept without, y'know, using a metaphor in the explanation, so... sure? Blowing up the death star didn't literally defeat the empire and cartoon monsters didn't literally cause the blitz in WW2, good job noticing these definitely important logical inconsistencies that were clearly an oversight and not an intentional literary device.

// Admittedly I didn't read the original French, maybe there's a giant conspiracy to insert new politics in the translation, presumably enacted by the lizard people using their jewish space laser.
