Meanwhile, Putin has noticed and has escalated to 11 basically blockading half of ukraine southern coast which is an act of war and would be exactly what to do to wage war against ukraine without having commercial ships (or american ships) blocking them.

Let's not forget Ukraine is led by a comedian. It could simply be that he is as competent as a Reality TV star was at governing the US.

Controlling both sides and blockading ukraine for the next 6 months for ''military exercices'' when youve been threatening them with war for the last month are two very different things.

Are you familiar with the farking history of the region? In particular the incident where the Russians fired on and seized 3 Ukrainian ships? You know, that I linked?  This is just an escalation of what's been a defacto blockade for years.

Actually Ukraine has a very large strategic significance, not the least of which is telling a dictator that he doesn't get to invade other countries because his puppet lost control. Appeasing violent dictators results in bad things, on average.

There's a vested global interest in preventing the success of land grab wars. Since WW2, there has been a fairly consistent world effort to mediate these kinds of conflicts or to intervene on behalf of the country that was annexed or had their land taken. That is not to say that we haven't allowed precedents for naked land grabs to stand. India took over the Portuguese enclaves with no more penalties than sternly worded letters from Portugal's NATO allies. But deep down everyone knew India was kinda right there. The criticism was about their methods, not their end goal. But if you allow land grabs to go unanswered and undo the mostly decent record that has dissuaded such acts, you risk them becoming more common and ending up with chaos.

I think what happened is someone, probably on the State Department side, thought it would be a good idea to send a couple of ships to 'send a message'. Then someone else, probably from the military side of things, said that if shiat goes down then those two ships will be toast. The Russians like to do things sneaky, so those ships will be sunk with no clear evidence of who did it. Being in the Black Sea, US investigators will not have safe access to do their thing, so no one will ever be able to prove who did it.

It's better to keep the ships out, and come up with an alternate way of sending that message.

If any other administration did this, it would be described as a MASSIVE farkUP, but for Biden, please just keep walking and whistling. I suppose its better to look like an idiot than to feel compelled to follow through on a bad plan.

What exactly was the purpose of sending two destroyers there in the first place? Gulf of Tonkin part deux?

This will embolden our enemies, so they better send a carrier group to the western pacific.

It's a missed opportunity, particularly with Russia's declaration that they've closed the Strait to foreign naval vessels. Ukraine should have invited those ships to make an extended port visit in Mariupol, which we would have every legal right to take them up on, and then forced the issue at the bridge. No 'sneakiness' would have been possible with the whole world's watching us drive up to the Strait, with international law on our side. It would have forced Putin to back down.

This. Not sure why they halted the show of force. But it is more than likely that various deescalation moves are being done by both sides based on recent phone call between presidents, and we lack the whole picture.

Just because the ships are not going into the Black Sea now, it doesn't mean they are not staying near Greece or Turkey to go in later if the Russians don't follow thru on whatever was decided.

Yep - that's always the unspoken assumption underlying my opinion posts here. Though in this case, I'd like to see some sort of equivalent moves from Russia.

I'd like to figure out that part too. Although sometimes these things are handled in such a way that makes the quid pro quo hard to discern. If the exact tradeoff is immediately too obvious, it may not exactly work out as a face saving measure. It may take a little while until we get an answer, assuming that there is even really is some sort of implied deal here.

You really think the military just uses civilian grade heavy steel in their state of the art warships? They have super advanced secret metal technologies that are at least 15-20 years ahead of anything we know about. Sure your steel may not float on water but obviously the military steel does. That's how planes fly too, duh.
