IIRC, foxes are members of the dog family but for some reason act more like felines.

Foxes are definitely more removed genetically from the other canines like dogs, wolves and coyotes.  Can't cross breed.  And nocturnal, hence eyes similar to cats.

Whenever I can, I try to donate to a place called Save A Fox, which takes in foxes that have been neglected, rescued from fur farms, etc.. They also try to find Forever Homes for their foxes to people who have been properly screened to ensure the foxes get the best rest of their lives.

One recent addition is this little floof potato.

Most of you probably know about the Siberian Silver Fox experiment

It only took about a dozen generations to mostly domesticate foxes
Don't expect dog behavior, foxes aren't dogs

This guy challenged Stalin & Lysenko both, on the down low but it was still incredibly dangerous

The side effects were foxes with shorter legs & shouts, plus curled tails like a Husky's.

Sadly, the experiment was ended after funding dried up after the fall of the Soviet Union, and there were no descendants since all of the foxes were fixed.

Sometimes you get lucky though, like Tyr the Fox, who is bred 23 generations away from the wild reds, and is very sociable.

In all fairness, just to help people who think "D'awww I wanna pet foxeh too!" get a better understanding, they are NOT and I repeat NOT good as pets. They are twitchy by instinct and require huge amounts of TLC and attention, and even if they may be nice to you, they can get VERY territorial/agressive towards other people.

I think my clip is taken from a video by the aforementioned Save A Fox.
I just can't help but grin when I watch it, though.  It's like the woman who keeps an "Education" Canada Lynx, which she brings to schools and organizations to educate them about his species.  My favorite of his is "I'm A Big Baby" and you can hear him purr like a badly tuned motorbike.

I know. I was just pointing out that foxes can be cute but they're are not pets.

Sadly, there's too many stupid people out there who don't know this, and I don't want to see any foxes being bought as kits and then dumped out to fend for themselves when they don't act "cute" enough.

We have a fox in the neighborhood and my dog and it seem to be engaged in a literal pissing contest.
