Imagine being a Russian diplomat and being told "You're up for an ambassadorship."

Your mind would race. Where will you be going? Somewhere warm and tropical? Somewhere imaginably rich and modern?

And then you're told to hop in the back of the turnip truck and pack your best recipe for rock soup.

When I was 16 I was written up for eating a BigBoy that had sat under the lights too long. I didn't understand what was wrong with eating it because it needed tossed anyways and was given the explanation of "If no one buys it, we can toss it in the trash and mark it as food waste."

22 years later and I still don't agree with that. Give the food away, discount it so deeply that someone will buy it. Just don't toss it in the trash. There is soo much damn food and waste that no one needs to be hungry.

I would just try to keep my head down and not ever take a government post, because I really don't want to be poisoned to death.

the malnutrition is real, but also real is the fact that because of american presence in south korea. there has been much more of a cultural mix that just is not possible in north korea

Starving a select group of their own people is a normal part of any communist regime.  The Russian and Chinese have it down to an art form.

did you watch the video?  the picture was not a representation of a single meal.  as she said, some people eat actual mud for a meal(tho it is not suggested because it leads to constipation).  others look for undigested kernels of corn in animal poop and eat that.  a serving of rice costs as much as an average persons monthly income.

This is Fark. Of course I didn't watch it or even read the article.

I did read the story of a man that escaped North Korea in the 70's. According to him, they eat any plant matter they can find and any animal they can catch.

In most areas of the united states, that would saddle the franchise and restaurant chain with legal risk if someone got sick regardless of if the food caused it, therefore it is better to toss the food. Some counties have passed laws that have given legal immunity to restaurants that donate old food, in good faith, but that is not the common situation.

If I can find it, I'll link it in a later post, but there is a video on Youtube about a Nork soldier that defected to the South by literally running across the DMZ. The other Norks shot him several times but he still managed to make it to safety where he was rescued by South Korean soldiers. He was taken to the hospital and while the doctors patched him up from the attempted lead poisoning, they also took the time to remove several large tapeworms from his stomach and intestines. The guy was so malnourished that he actually put on 15-20 pounds of weight while in the hospital recovering from the bullet wounds and surgery.

I am sure Best Korea is nice if you have hard currency.

And your own embassy compound.

And the roads to yourself.

There is videos of diplomats shopping in Poyuang, and it looks fine.

https://youtu.be/JIO4McPQuE8

Random video. But from the ones I've seen, they do obviously accept Euro, but also the local currency (they prefer Euro, but whatever), so the inflation is under control. And why wouldn't it be, seeing as they've learned from Germany.

Just don't print any money except to replace damaged money. If the prices rise, it's not inflation then, it's things being more expensive (not an educated economist).

All the same, if I were a diplomat, Best Korea would be a dream destination. All of you have to do is go outside and rever all the Kims. Shop on the roads you have for yourself, and then otherwise dick around in your embassy compound.

it's important to remember that this is just a temporary issue and all famines are self resolving. either the next crop is good enough to feed everyone or a bunch of people die and you don't need so much food. Presto - no more famine.  the best part is you don't need to do anything, it happens automatically.  Libertarian/laissez fair famine management is where it's at.

Yeah, we are all doing a fabulous job of keeping their citizens just barely alive enough to be productive slaves.

We should either let that state crumble under its own weight or step in militarily.

About 19% of the world's population was undernourished in 1990. That was down to about 9% in 2019.

The thing about sovereignty is, if you fashion yourself into an closed-off, prideful, antagonistic hermit kingdom, the rest of the world isn't able to help you in the same way it does countries who actually participate in the global community.

Worse than that, lots of places purposely destroy stuff they're throwing away, to discourage dumpster-diving. Florists cut the stems off of roses, shoe stores slash shoes before they're thrown-out, and so on. Americans are pathologically averse to anyone getting anything for free.
