Nah. They will give them "loans" to improve their infrastructure and own the country that way.

They were never known for being smart.  If they simply bided their time the US would withdraw and they could takeover... Public opinion would make it impossible for Biden to put troops Back in Afganistan after finally pulling them out...

Like the US has willingly withdrawn from Iraq? It's been 20 years. The Taliban didn't get the US to this point by Biden their time.

We didn't "willingly" withdraw from Iraq.  The Iraqi parliament wouldn't grant prosecutorial immunity* to US forces, so we GTFO.

*This is a feature of every agreement with a country with US forces stationed there.  It doesn't mean you won't get in trouble, it just means the US has to voluntarily hand you over to local authorities / can easily gain custody of US forces arrested by local authorities.  Not having this means the host nation could pass a "no wearing American uniforms" law and arrest any military member they find, punishable by death, and (legally) there's not a lot of recourse for the US.  Hands down it was the easiest way to get US forces out of Iraq.

It really is amazing how people in this thread think the Taliban is responsible for the drug trade and child prostitution when the Taliban banned them and it's the USA that brought those things back.

I'm planning to call my reps today to voice support for any sort of program which would offer a pathway towards a life in the US for Afghani peoples who have helped our troops out

They've gotten a lot of Belt and Road in Africa, but... I feel like lately there's been faltering, push back, and missteps as people wise up to the debt traps, ecological raping, and shiatty behavior

They've got a lot more carrots than sticks I think when it comes to actually owning these places since they don't actually project military power in the region

Well, yeah, but my point is that we signed an agreement to leave by a certain date and if we don't by that date we are the ones breaking the agreement.

Gross, Afghanistan's a beautiful place with a very long history and tons of culture. It sucks a certain breed of religious extremism has spread through that region. It wasn't always like that in Central Asia, I suspect the Saudi's financing of the Wahabis has more to do with it than anything but I'm more familiar with Uzbekistan than Afghanistan
