Dirt racing is actually pretty good racing. For those that don't agree, EAT DIRT!

Looks like the vestiges of it are still there. My dad didn't race there as he'd have been too young, I think. He did most of his racing in AL and TN in the 60s, but he did race a bit after we moved to AR in the 70s when I was very young. Too bad we never really talked about it. I was the youngest, and my mom put a stop to that shiat as soon as she could, I imagine. Kinda cool.

dirt racing is fun, but a mile and a half high-banked dirt track sounds terrifying

cool article - never knew about this track before

More than the vestages; the video in the article shows the racing surface still there plain as day.

Me neither. I have seen local races on dirt tracks in my area, like Port Royal and Selinsgrove in Pennsylvania. At PR me and some friends use to pay to get into the infield and we really did nothing but drink beer while watching the races.

High banks and anything over 1/2 mile is wrong for dirt racing. Dirt racing is done on small bull rings with not much banking. Part of the fun of dirt racing is watching drivers try to ride the top of the track without losing traction and going over the berm.

I watched a little of the Bristol dirt cup race. Not entertaining for me. A bull ring no doubt, but 36 degrees banking is way, way too much for dirt.

going to try to make it to Selinsgrove one of these weekends. the only dirt track I've been to so far has been 5 Mile Point in Kirkwood, NY. my buddy's dad loved going there - his son hates going so I'd go along with him. always had a good time - just fun sitting in the stands and drinking beer, even if the racing some nights isn't the best. my buddy's dad passed two years back and I haven't been up that way since, but I'll make it back one of these nights.

penncan speedway in susquehanna, pa isn't all that far from me either. never heard anything great about the racing or facility there, but I do want to go check it out some night

I never went to Port Royal or Selinsgrove, but I remember Silver Spring with fondness and I still occasionally go to Williams Grove, which has become a bit of a Mecca for dirt track racing, especially when the World of Outlaws come for the National Open.

As fast as they go around the Grove I can only imagine the insanity a 1.5 mile oval with high-banked turns would create.
