They don't pay as much as a new private earns.

What about bail bonds offices and pawn shops. Can't really call it a rebound unless we have full service exploitation of low income communities.

uhhh, got some news flash for you "By Reuters Staff" dumb asses.

When dollar stores are expanding, this is not a sign that the economy is doing better. The exact opposite, it literally means so manly people are so poor off that the fooking dollar store is the only option they have.

When the bottom end of the market is what is expanding/where the growth is, that is not a signal of overall economic prosperity/recovery, but the exact opposite of that.

Also the Dollar General is more expensive than your typical supermarket (not Whole Paycheck bad, but more expensive than the typical one), so this is yet anther example of the Sam Vimes Boot Theory of Economic Injustice.  You go to Dollar General because you don't have a car or otherwise can't get to a real supermarket.  It is a captive market and they price to exploit that.

The dollar store is something else and typically a better value.  But more likely used by those who still have a car (and they are also in shopping centers or nearby real supermarkets).  Expect to have to buy in extremely large quantities to match the price of dollar store stuff (but you will certainly be getting better quality.  But I still suspect the Dollar store quality beats Dollar General).

/mostly stopped at Dollar General while bicycling through small towns
//was shocked by the prices
///learned about dollar stores while unemployed.  Don't underestimate them

You can't really fault Dollar General for giving you shopping options where people actually live (city centers and rural towns) when Walmart and most major grocery chains refuse to do the same and instead build next to the interstate or around the beltline. That they charge a premium on name brand products is to be somewhat expected.

That said, they are priced the same as Wally and Target on generic mouthwash, paper towels, socks, canned goods, toothpaste, dental floss, peroxide, panty liners, tea and coffee. They are cheaper than both on facial tissue, dry roasted nuts and name brand soda (on sale).

Plus I can get to the store without walking across 200 yards of parking lot first.

Also, you don't have to get dressed up like you have to for going to WalMart.

The economy is rebounding so much that people are flocking to Dollar General. Am I missing something?

Around here Dollar General is building in very random spots miles from even a small town.  Must be studying traffic patterns and figuring out the best spot out in the boondocks to drop a store, because they are always packed.

We frequent a local Dollar Store to buy things like sponges, greeting cards (two for a dollar), dish soap, dish towels, cloth napkins, etc. One of my credit cards gives me %2 cash back, so it's really the $.98 store!

I've been to Dollar Generals in Florida and it's a whole other story.

Dollar General is building here in my little fart of a town in Eastern Oregon. Doesn't that basically say that we are now considered too poor for real stores?

I occasionally shop at DG if I'm needing one or two things and don't want to drive across town.

When I have visited a DG, I have been amazed at how often the whole store seems to be being run by one person, therefore the register is unoccupied because the sole employee is on the far side of the store having to stock merchandise, clean up a mess, etc.
