First of all, fark him.

Before the Rose jock-sniffers get here and try to hand-wave away the more publicized history...shall we begin with his have-a-seat-right-there preferences in girls? His mob debts? Blowing out Mario Soto's arm because he had bets down? His stat-padding? Putting himself ahead of the Reds' success when a team with a healthy ace and anybody other than a slap-hitting statue at first base would have made the playoffs at least once?

So fark him.

And as for you "b-b-b-b-b-b-but legalized sports betting" jagoffs...participants are still prohibited from betting, you purulent buttchugs.

Fark. Him.

I hope the Eras Committees vote Dave Concepcion into the Hall, just to rub Pete's nose in it.

I totally respect your opinion and see where you're coming from, but I have a solid counterpoint: my grandma had a fancy photography magazine with a picture where you could see the side of his buttcheek, and it got me through some mighty lean years.

A manager betting against his own team is an extinction-level threat for baseball.  If the fans think that games are being thrown, it becomes as believable as professional wrestling.  MLB has made it Extremely Clear that they will ban your ass for betting on games you're involved in.  Even if you are the all-time hits leader and a certain lock for first-ballot Hall of Famer.

I saw him once in Vegas, when I was wandering through the mall attached to Mandalay Bay.  He seemed like he was having a good time.  He definitely seemed like he was in his element.

Better there than Cooperstown.

All of this right here.

Every locker room in the MLB has a metal sign screwed to the wall. No betting on baseball. It is a fundamental and cardinal rule of the game.

At the same time, he was a great player and the all time hits leader.

I believe there should be a secret plan to place Pete Rose in the Baseball Hall of Fame---one year after his death. Never give him the pleasure of being inducted or even knowing that he was---or be able to cash in on the honor.

This. Stats are the heart of the game. Rose goes in after he croaks. Just like Bonds and Clemens.

While I agree with you on all of this, I still will never forgive Rose for taking Ray Fosse out of baseball during an All-Star game. This "win at all costs no matter the circumstances" thing Rose had surely led him to believe it was OK to bet on games later in life as long as he could reconcile it in his own head.

While I certainly agree with your sentiment, Pete Rose should go into the Hall before Barroid, McGwire, Clemens, etc.  And only then, it should be along with Shoeless Joe, after both have fulfilled the "lifetime" part of the ban.

Also, if he were to somehow get reinstated before he passes, let him be a hitting coach.

The Hall of Fame has been a joke for decades. Some of the best players who ever lived are not in it - Rose, Shoeless Joe, Clemens, Bonds, etc. But Harold Baines, the poster boy for "above average", is in.

By now, why anyone cares about who is and isn't in the HoF is beyond me.

Between football's insistence on cozying up with betting (mostly fantasy football, but also moving to Vegas) and insisting on amature referees, I can only hope for an extinction level event in the future for the NFL.

If you've reached the point in your life where you think it's perfectly reasonable to equate HoF eligibility to the prosecution of criminal offences, it's probably time to take a step back, consider your priorities and really think about why you care about the HoF so much.

Not so much bet against as, going by the betting slips from '87, he didn't bet games when Soto or Bill Gullickson was starting.

Soto's arm was pretty well shot by then, but I have no idea why he'd have had a problem with Gullickson except that Rose never was a real good managerial judge of talent - if he was he'd have hung up the spikes after '84 instead of putting his own ancient compiling ass in the lineup for another two years.

Says to me Rose was resting players for games where he had money down. To a bookie, that's no different from betting the Reds to lose.
