So. Britain. USSR. USA.

We turned what should have been an international police effort to bring OBL to justice into -what? A war against a tactic?

The people in Saudi Arabia who underwrote 9/11 are largely still at large.

Why are we in Afghanistan? Why is it that it is incumbent upon us to "fix

No, I WILL NOT trust you. If you have to say that, your pseudoanalysis is automatically shallow and pedantic. The US funded and supported the Taliban even after they blew up the Bamiyan Buddhas-- almost up to the 9/11 attacks, just as the US funded Saddam Hussein right up until he invaded Kuwait.

It will never be the right time to withdraw. It will always be better to pull them out 3 months later than whatever deadline you give.

But it will always be that 10 years later is way longer than it should have been, & that's how we get to a 20 year war.

the reasons we went in -- after the Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan, gave shelter to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda as it carried out the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, DC -- have not been fully addressed in the last two decades

The guy the last Democratic President had shot dead, along with a bunch of #2s and #3s.

We damn well better allow the Afghans that helped us (interpreters, etc.) to come here at the same time with a green card.  The farking Taliban will be hunting them and their families down after we leave.  We owe them.

China had little need for Vietnam to expand its influence in Asia

Because the Vietnamese didn't want to become a client state to the CCP.

Should've taken Bin Laden out at Tora Bora in December 2001 when we had the chance, and walked away.  Afghanistan had been fighting a civil war since the 1970's.  We weren't going to fix it, what made us think we could; because we won the Cold War 10 years earlier?

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden is expected to formally announce the planned withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2001, which will also mark the end of America's longest war and his admitting he has Obama's time machine.

Yeah, that's really the bottom line. Whether we "should" be there or not really isn't the point. Whatever we're doing isn't working and never will.

Its actually Europe that should be pissed about the US pulling out of Afghanistan as poppy growth and opium production that drives the supply of heroin into European cities is about to skyrocket. I don't know if that really matters a lot anymore in the age of fentanyl but it certainly doesn't help reduce the spread of addiction.

If we're not willing or able to either rebuild Afghanistan or take out the Taliban ( the latter of which, unless handled EXCEPTIONALLY well, would likely not make things better anyway), we need to leave. That's all there is to it. Same for Iraq, and every other Middle Eastern country we're poking our noses into.

The only way you win an occupation is doing what the chinese do in tibet and what they did with the uyghurs..

Occupation is not really the good word for it, its more like ethnic cleansing. But really, who wants to go through the trouble of ethnic cleanse afghanistan? Theres a bunch of rare earth minerals and thats it.

Occupying afghanistan after a bunch of terrorists attacked you is like occupying the entire US south after a white supremacist shoots up the local grocery store.

2021-04-14 2:29:19 AM
So there is a peace agreement that says we must leave by May. Negotiated earlier. But Biden says we need until September. The Taliban will become part of the government.

This is kinda like Columbia? With the Farc rebels? becoming part of the government. That might not be the right country/group. But I wonder how that peace plan is working out.

To some people, merely spending the time and money is success.   Those are the people selling our military the bullets and bombs.

The possibility of winning an occupation is mostly dependent on the characteristics of the people being occupied. Some people will shrug, accept a foreign regime, and move on with their lives. Others will keep fighting a guerilla war for generations.

2021-04-14 2:31:34 AM
But, trust me, the reasons we went in -- after the Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan, gave shelter to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda as it carried out the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, DC -- have not been fully addressed in the last two decades. Moreover, even a planned, or staged withdrawal as the administration has promised, will hardly eliminate that original threat of terrorism -- or the many other, often deadly, challenges that have emerged since America's arrival.

Oh, fark right the fark off!  There was no excuse for the invasion.  It just played well.  "Look, we're taking serious action!  Never you mind that it was largely the Saudis."

2021-04-14 2:31:44 AM
yohohogreengiant:

Why are we in Afghanistan?

Because they didn't hand over Osama bin Laden five minutes after 9/11 became global news.  That it took almost a decade to find him, despite every major western intelligence asset actively looking for him, will forever be overlooked and ignored when it comes to that facet of the Afghanistan invasion.

Why is it that it is incumbent upon us to "fix

You invaded their country and destroyed their infrastructure.

Removing military forces is the right call, since you never should have gone there in the first place, but there is still a responsibility to fix what you farked up.
