Happens with movie quotes all the time, for example "that's not a knife, THIS is a knife". It's amazing how many people will rewrite the scene in their head after seeing someone else botch it.

The best example is on Adam Sandler's stupid answer in Billy Madison or whatever it was, he went back through school.  The mis-quotes can actually be analyzed in a number of ways including throw-away words like articles, synonyms, ordering, and others.  It's a very complicated and specific response, and people think they have memorized it, and type it out wherever.  The aggregate mis-rememberance where some people get this part right or that part right but miss other parts is actually fascinating.

Do your PhD thesis on it.

Mandela "dying in prison" is the stupidest possible example of whatever bullshiat "effect" people want to imagine. He was literally the President of South Africa for years after he got out of prison. If you think he died in prison, you're ignorant as fark of basic history. You aren't the victim of some "effect".

I thought the same thing.

Also in All Along the Watchtower when Hendrix was singing "So let us stop talkin' falsely now, The hour's getting late"
I thought he was saying "I was getting laid".
Had to find the correct lyrics in A guitar magazine when they released the tabulation.

That's the way it's always ended. I owned the vinyl and right after that fade out it slammed into Sheer Heart Attack which was always a jarring transition.

My theory is that people are confusing two popular songs of the early '80s.  One, by the Specials, "Nelson Mandela", tells the story of him in South African prison.  A few years earlier, Peter Gabriel sang "Biko", about Stephen Biko, an activist, being killed in custody in a South African prison.  "Biko" was not necessarily a hit, but an excellent, memorable song that grew in popularity.  As the years went on, perhaps people muddled the two stories in their heads, and Mandela became the one murdered.  Although, in that song, the refrain is "Free Nelson Mandela", so strong a phrase that most people incorrectly call the song that.  And why would you call for freedom of somebody that's dead?  I don't know.

Misheard or misremembered  lyrics are just something else altogether.

Too many assumptions there.  What percentage of the population that thought Mandela died in prison also ever heard Biko?  That's way too tenuous a connection for the widespread misunderstanding of Mandela's life.

And why would you call for freedom of somebody that's dead?  I don't know.

Yep.

It was a "top of the head" theory at best.  I don't know of anybody that thought Mandela died in prison, though, either.  Apparently there are absolute masses of them out there, enough to name an "effect" about.  Or, as often seems the case, somebody's made a mountain out of happening upon two or three people that either thought that thing or didn't disagree when somebody else said it.  For all I know, they never thought twice about it until some grad student in a lab coat asked them.

Revenge of the Nerds is probably the biggest contributor to the "effect" for that particular song. The movie ends with the Queen version, and then a cover version, that heavily features the "of the world" phrase plays over a credits montage of the principal actors.
