A) It will never see the light of day if they even get around to actually drafting something and not just posturing on Twitter  B) MLB owners seem like the type of guys that donate heavily GOP so I'm okay with them shooting themselves in the foot  C) Every other major sports league operates just fine without an exemption, so....meh.

sahilkapur: Inbox: Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Josh Hawley are planning to announce legislation today "to end MLB's special immunity from antitrust laws" after their decision to relocate the All-Star game over Georgia's voting law. ⚾

I never thought I would see the day that a modern republican would be proposing anti-trust laws. I would say that Ted Cruz is cutting off his nose to spite his face, but cutting off his nose might be an improvement.

I don't have a problem with MLB losing this protection, but isn't it un-constitutional to write a law penalizing solely a specific entity or person?

Man I can't wait to get in on that unregulated baseball market. There's billions to be made in baseball NFTs and cheap imports from previously sanctioned overseas baseball commodities manufacturers.

Everybody loves free speech when others are saying things they agree with.

When people say things they don't agree with, then free speech becomes a problem.

More pointless legislation that will never pass, that's what our Senators should be spending their time on.

I can see this as a "fundraising" strategy. "Nice baseball team you got there. Shame if something were to ... "happen" to it..."

They spoke ill of their God (by not validating the BS claims this "election integrity law" was based on) and so therefore they must be punished.

Don't have fascism, white supremacy, and other hateful bigotry be your choice of free speech, and you will have no objections from me. It's pretty simple.

Suby, come into the 21st century. The concept that the Republican party has a platform based on policy planks is quaint and outdated. The Republican party has marketing slogans and talking points.

Since a law was written to grant them the exemption to normal anti-trust law, it is legal to undo that exemption.

Of course, anti-trust law is meaningless in the US anymore so who cares?

I also don't have a problem with MLB losing this, I'm not sure it qualifies as a bill of attainder if you're removing a specific exemption from the law.

iaazathot: I don't have a problem with MLB losing this protection, but isn't it un-constitutional to write a law penalizing solely a specific entity or person?

It depends upon how the law is written.  The courts have generally taken the position that the actual text matters, not the result, since there may be a valid reason to write a law that affects a single entity (like say, creating a safety regime to some new industry that currently had only one participant)  And thee courts generally want the law to specifically call itself a punishment.  If the law says "MLB loses their immunity because they did not worship Our God and Savior, the Eternal Emperor Trump" that is right out.  But if it says "No company can have immunity"  that would pass through completely fine.  It would only affect MLB in practice, but it applies to any company.  "MLB loses its immunity" might even fly, since it would not tie the loss of status to a specific act, and is removing a perk MLB has that no one else has.  But the last one would depend upon how crotchety the judges are feeling that day and might go either way.

Pointing out the hypocrisy doesn't work.  They genuinely believe there's supposed to be a double standard that favors them.  They've never believed they should adhere to their own standards or follow their own rules.

The political party which had supporters beating cops with American flags as they invaded our capitol building, fights tooth and nail to keep people from exercising their franchise against the very premise of American democracy is now against baseball?  America's pastime?

Somehow these anti-American right-wing simps have convinced themselves they're "patriots."  They hate everything about America.

Elected GOP officials are bad enough, but imagine being a big enough piece of shiat and absolute moron to be satisfied that the people you voted for do nothing better with their time than find ways to stick it to people and be reactionary piles of excrement.

The GOP and all their constituents are a chancre on the taint near the anus of this nation
