I think I posted this a while back on a Sunday Music thread. Chelsea Wolfe is farkin awesome. I've seen her in concert twice (pre-covid) and both were amazing shows.

I enjoyed it, but I'm a fan of Chelsea Wolfe. The drummer in the video is Urian Hackney. He's in the band Rough Francis with his brothers and before them their father and his brothers were in the proto punk band Death. Here he is with the Hawk family covering The Damned last April.

Chelsea is wonderful. Got to see her on tour with Russian Circles a couple years, also phenomenal musicians. For those who like her, also check out Emma Ruth Rundle if you haven't.

I like Emma's work with Thou. Anna Von Hausswolff is in a similar vein as those two women. AVH is my favorite of the three.

It was good. I liked the unconventional sound of the verses, I wanted them to continue that variation for the chorus too.

What makes Crazy Train work is Randy Rhoads playing the full minor scale for the song's main riff on a train-like rhythm. It's precision playing that only sounds dirty if you don't know what to listen for. He also laid down identical tracks on both the left and the right and one down the center - so the sound is actually RR playing three guitars.

This is just a wall of badly edited fuzzy noise compared to that.

I wasn't impressed. Made it about a minute into it before turning it off. Whoever was running the mixing board needs to have it shoved up their ass

Agreed - My main issue here is that they needed to amp up the input on her lyrics, you could barely hear her over the rest of the music.
And I also agree that I like the crisper sound of the guitar work in the original version, this sounds mashed together almost like the two tracks they had going were very slightly off sync from each other and notes were getting slurred into each other.

I have never heard of Chelsea Wolfe and I have never really listened to Ozzy (although I'm familiar with Crazy Train).

Having said that, I appreciate this kind of cover where someone takes the original and gives it a different reading. I always have time for that kind of thing.

I'm left cold when the cover is just a recreation of the original. It's OK for a bar band to do, but if you are putting it out there for mass consumption I just wonder "Why?"

The Ataris cover of "Boys of Summer" springs to mind. What was the point there?

Agreed. And this one is right in line with Wolfe's hazy mix of goth, dark metal (or whatever sub-sub-subgenre fits), shoegaze, and horror. It sounds like HER, not like she's trying to recreate Ozzy.

That's how to do it.

Do I love the cover? No. It's mostly just fine. But I'd rather hear something like this than a slavishly devoted attempt to recreate the original.
