What a GOP plank may look like

2021-04-12 12:15:04 PM
Taking from the poor and giving to the rich is always popular.

2021-04-12 12:15:12 PM
Not really true.  They still have "de-regulate everything ever" and "more tax cuts for corporations and the already wealthy" with a few sprinkles of "we like monopolies and think we should have more of them" and a side of "fark your rights".

Lots of substance to chew on, like gristle.

Great list. I'd add the backlash originated because universities and campuses wanted to install gender-neutral bathrooms as far back as 2009. https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/05/timeline-bathroom-wars/

With the defeat of DOMA, zealots set their sights on trans rights as the next wedge issue.

They have no interest in governing - the name of the game is fundraising for their next election. And with their Base, constant outrage/culture war gets them more attention - and therefore $$ - than any particular legislation that might make taxpayers' lives better.

Sure, but it doesn't hurt to point out that their stupid derp is also cruel. Because "battling" rightwing assholes isn't about trying to get through to THEM. That's pointless.

We're trying to get the nonvoters and others who think that voting doesn't matter. People who might actually be able to see and act on reason.

voted overwhelmingly, by a three-to-one ratio, to override a veto from the Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, and effectively ban gender-affirming medical treatments, such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy, for trans youth under the age of 18.

I would imagine there's a lot of support for such a law, especially in arkansas.

Conservatives don't weep for their country.  They weep because they can't tell others what to do any more.  They weep when they lose status and are kicked out of the houses of power.

Yeah, but what's that support based on? The fictional belief that gender dysphoria is a "fad" being promoted to young people on tic tok? That thousands of young men are joining women's sports for an unfair advantage?

2021-04-12 12:39:14 PM
Still got the abortions.  Gotta protect the lives of the unborn.  Once born, they can bootstrap themselves.
Jesus said 'people who abort children are....  '  hang on.  I have it somewhere.  Uh, probably doomed.  Everything Jesus spake about was either doomed to hell or welcomed in to a vague Heaven.

No one ever asked Jesus what Heaven was, did they?

"And Jesus went in to the village and the people did turn out.  A man did cry out: "Son of God!  What is this Heaven like?  If I have an eye poked out in this life, will it be waiting up in Heaven with my wife?"   And Jesus shuffled his feet on to the next town.

People who hate vote their hate. You can't shift them with dynamite. That's why Republicans play to their base.

Liberals need to disabuse themselves of the notion that Republicans believe the twisted logic they advance in defense of their indefensible positions.  They operate exclusively on hate and will only work as hard as necessary to hide it.

You're assuming that those who battle right wingers want to win and aren't just there to look morally superior.  Maybe those claims of "virtue signalling" were onto something.

/no, that isn't signalling
//signalling theory is rather interesting, and always involves a cost (which those who claim "virtue signalling" often wind up paying.  Especially after "nazi signalling" is exposed).
///the biggest problem was economic signalling.  You could write a paper on it that was just basic poker theory in economic jargon.  This quickly became all to apparent and research on the fairly important topic dried up.

There really never was a time trans people were accepted.  I do, however, remember nobody giving two shiats about them in a political sense.  Too few and zero political standing to even bother with targeting with legislation.  The degree to which social conservatives will go to keep their base engaged is sad.  Fundamentally that's all I see here is desperation to keep the base engaged and voting to cling to what power they still have.

Next up:  Furries.

Nah, it's only been since 1960 or so.  They used to be just pro-business but in the 60's they realized they could use hate as an organizing, fundraising and motivational principle to counter the actual unpopularity of their policies.

yakmans_dad: People who hate vote their hate. You can't shift them with dynamite. That's why Republicans play to their base.

I'm pretty convinced that the GOP/right has a large contingent of those in denial of self.  Self loathing gay (probably mostly men but probably more than a few women) folks, gender dysphoric, any other 'forbidden' identity.  People that have refused to accept who they are or are too afraid/cowardly to accept it feel especially affronted by those who do and try to live their lives accordingly.

Probably more than a few of this variety are leading the charge in these 'culture war' issues.  Probably a lot of them are secretly hurting and need help - on an individual basis I can have compassion for them and hope they change their ways, but as a collective power bloc they must be neutralized in the less sinister sense of that word
