I loved when people started arguing during the man-on-the-street style interviews by what is clearly a dude with a puppet on his arm, they'd usually argue with the puppet. It was the most bizarre thing.

IIRC, the show's creators said they were trying to be as offensive as possible to see if MTV would cancel them.

I mean, holy shiat:

Can't wait to read this. The creators Vernon Chatman and John Lee have a history of doing weirdly contentious interviews for AVClub which is partly bit, partly general arseholery but always entertaining. First one in 2006 talking about Wonder Showzen, then again for Xavier: Renegade Angel, and then The Heart, She Holler. All their shows are delightfully farked up and I can't choose a favorite cause I love them all.

Love his work too. Have you seen Final Flesh? I just saw it recently when I found out my younger sibiling ripped the dvd for our plex server. Vernon wrote the script then sent each act of it to a company that makes adult fetish videos to film it. It doesnt have any sex in it. It's fascinating.

His book Mindsploitation is a fun read. He uses those websites that you can pay to write college papers and makes all sorts of weird requests.

They would argue with Clarence the puppet, but clearly be looking directly at the puppeteer, which was hilarious. The "patience" interview was a work of genius.

That show got away with a hell of a lot for a two season run.

I keep looking for the isolated video of the kid telling the old woman at the racetrack "gamble-gamble-gamble DIE" for use in Fark gambling threads. But it doesn't exist.

Wonder Showzen was completely bonkers and you can easily figure out the point in the second season where they knew they were cancelled. (I think it was the focus group episode). It would explain why the Cooperation episode was all of their remaining material put on screen at the same time.

My favorite Clarence bit was still the first one, when he followed Central Park joggers, asking "What are you running from?"

This show was introduced to me by none other than comedian Eric Andre. I'm not buddies with him, but me and a mutual comedienne friend ended up at his place after one of her comedy gigs, for which Eric was the MC.

He rolled a fattie and put on this show for our entertainment.  Just us 3, laughing our heads off.

Did you live by a college with dorms? I grew up ~ 1 mile SSEish of Hofstra as the crow flies and I had MTV2 and a few other odd ones over the air before we got cable in 2001ish. In the winter (no leaves) you could see their radio tower blinking from my lawn. I always figured that was the reason.

My University cable had MTV2 but not Nickelodeon or Disney.

I left out some context bc I recognize the handle of the person I was replying to from New York threads. Hofstra has a pretty serious broadcasting program, so my assumption about the shiatty low-power simulcast of MTV2 I got over the air was a toy used by their broadcasting program. I could be totally wrong. The dorm thing just mean "big serious school" as opposed to community college.

It was on MTV2. You'll need patience to get through it if you decide to watch it though.
