Once saw a quicksand pit in Samoa. Local guide said their hopeless romantics would commit suicide by walking in there.

Probably sappy BS for tourists.

I remember hearing Mulaney talk about that and laughing out loud.  The only place I've ever encountered it was in WI on one of the Lake Michigan beaches south of Door County.  Conditions were just right and there was a strip along the shore where water was flowing through the sand enough to create quicksand.  It was a strange feeling, but nowhere near as dramatic as the movies made me think it would be.  I was able to get out without a problem by flopping onto my back and then lifting my legs out.  I remember repeating the whole experience a few times because it was so strange.

Tidal mud flats, on the other hand....

Coelho was with her son's lab, Lucy, who didn't get stuck and stayed near her side.

I'm pretty sure all nurses already know what it's like to be trapped and helpless and facing death.

I was in that situation once as a kid. I got myself out, but had to ride my bike home a few miles with no shoes or socks.

Oy. This is totally what "news" is going to be for the next five years, isn't it.  "Insert covid comparison here" and repeat ad nauseam.
