In the high-tech startup world, they often hire young people right out of college with promises of free food, beer, laundry service, ping pong, and more. And those young people are too naive to know that they're getting screwed by the low salaries that accompany the perks.

In my first job, the owner often gave the workers free theater or sports tickets once in a while? But if you reminded him of the raise that he promised you months ago, he'd give an excuse not to follow through.

I mean, TECHNICALLY, if you get the same pay for 32 hours as you did for 40... that's an increase in hourly wages.

Unlimited PTO is a scam designed so that they dont have to pay out any vacation time you've saved up when you leave AND crappy employers (90% of them) can always just deny your request for time off so the "unlimited" part is nonsense.

Exactly. And employees at companies with "unlimited PTO" do not, on average, take any more time off than those at other companies.

1)raise prices over time and cheapen or give less of product or service.

2) keep real wages flat or near flat.

Now you can buy the car with the built-in wifi, heated vibrating seats, and window tint of absolute black.  Its totally worth it!

But that's never going to happen, is it, Consumers?

I have been 20 years with this place.
When I leave, I expect clients to bug management about how come I'm gone, why can't they get service like I have given them, and I expect them to continue to ask for me by name long after I'm gone.
That, and knowing they will take 3 months to get clearance to hire a replacement, and this cycle will repeat 5 times before they find once that stays at least one year, and knowing that entire cycle will repeat 7 times before they find someone with the skill set and dependence on the paycheck to stay on, and knowing that person will never be paid as highly as I was, all will never cross my mind. I've gleefully forgotten most everything about any job I had that I did not love.
It was great when I needed a job, but they have been farking me in the ass and telling me they're giving me a blowjob, and all without the courtesy of a reach around for 20 years.

Ours wont buy back and caps at 240 hours so I've burned 2 or 3 weeks worth of vacation (not sure about sick time) and have two weeks left. I'm happy with that since Ive never worked for a job with paid sick/vacation.

Heh, at the end of last year I had a meeting with my new boss, he told me he was going to let me roll over all my vacation into next year, I informed him I had 160 hours left, he shot back with "we're going to let you roll some of your vacation time over into next year.".

My situation actually wasn't the company's fault.  I'm the night shift supervisor at a factory, and about half way through last year I had to walk my assistant out.  My last boss still would have let me use my time off, it just would have involved 1st and 2nd shift supervisors covering my hours.

I came in a couple hours late a few times, usually on slower nights.  I trust the 2nd shift supervisor as she mostly managed a different department and it was good experience for my current assistant to get the shift up and running.  The real problem is that I turned 3rd shift into the main production shift in my department.  Which made my counterpart on 1st shift look really bad, she is the type to hold a grudge and frankly she keeps running off her own workers.  I didn't trust her with mine so I ate a bunch of vacation time.

I'm in a much better situation this year.  My current assistant isn't as technically competent as my last one, but he's exceptional with people.  I know there will be a dip in production if I take off, but at least he won't break the team I've built.

I work for a French company in the US that requires, demands that you take 11 days out of the year in PTO time. Managers are required to agree to PTO if submitted in advanced. Downside is you can't save your PTO it disappears the next year if you don't use it. The catch is there are two months of the year that no one can take PTO at August and December.

I don't need "innovative" employers. I need a simple, consistent employer, happy to use the old tricks - paying well, providing effective workload management, hiring other competent folks - to ensure low staff turnover and high staff morale.

I don't need the latest version of "Employer Three-Card Monty" to keep me amused while robbing me blind.

Unlimited PTO has its positives and negatives.  Lack of payout is a negative, but I always burned mine anyways, so it wasn't a negative for me.  The only real downside is how employers use it to interact with parental leave.  Instead of being able to save up so I can take parental leave plus accrued vacation, the unlimited PTO covers the parental leave.

If I want time off it's not that hard but for the more shorter notice blow off of work, we're only well staffed two days.

But I get paid for it no matter what.  Labor law means if I leave the job I get paid for the vacation time banked. If I bank 240 and quit or retire, I get a check for that.

It's why "unlimited PTO" is a scam. There is no time to bank so if you quit they dont have to pay you for unused vacation time.

As I'm nearing retirement, I've become more educated on my companies policies, than HR itself.
One thing i noticed, as most of you, dont bank your sick time use it.. if you leave or retire, you dont get paid for those hours.. they just go..poof..

PTO off os capped at 240 hours. Leave yourself some wiggle room... But be mindful, all of those 240 hours will be paid out in one massive check, and taxed(raped) accordingly.
Comp time isn't paid either.. use it or loose it.

As I said, I could have taken time off, they would have just had the 2nd shift supervisor stay 4 hours late and one of the 1st shift supervisors come in 4 hours early.  I just didn't want to do that to my workers and it would have created more problems for me when I got back.

There is a reason I've been beating 1st shift at production since I took over and I have roughly twice as many workers, on 3rd shift, as my 1st shift counterpart does.  It's very common for good managers to eat a decent amount of vacation time every year, my boss for most of last year ate about as much as I did.  It's one of those things I was aware of when I crossed over into management.

Also, this pandemic has been hell for management at factories... we also make a product that's used primarily in new home construction and our main competitor is throwing in the towel and we're picking up their business.

The perks of a job far outweigh the pay to me at this point.  Obviously, it can't be total crap, but I'll take a place that allows complete flexibility (when you start the day, can I work 4-10 hour days, allowing near unlimited WFH, etc) as well as how good the health insurance and how big the 401k match is over great pay.  Add onto that company culture as well.

For the future, I hope a lot of employers shift to 32 hour weeks, so throw that onto flexibility.

I'd rather be happy being paid a less than be miserable being paid a lot.

Going forward I want good health insurance, I want a big 401k match, and I want full and complete flexibility (as much as is reasonable) as to how I work.  No more 40 hours in the office and having to come in at exactly 8:30 crap.  Those companies need to piss off.  I don't care if they pay a buttload more than anyone else.
