(Twitter)   Vice has colourised photos of Khmer Rouge torture and murder victims. And then added smiles. A lot of people have a problem with this   (twitter.com) divider line

What sort of absolutely self-centred asshole do you have to be to think something like that would be a good idea?

FFS.

He's done this sort of thing before, and Vice apparently has no issues with his historical revisionism.

I can see some value in colorizing the photos. That can frequently make the people in photos seem more "real" which has got to make it easier to care about what happened to them.

But changing their expressions?!? That is beyond awful. It erases what happened to them.

Maybe next he can do aborted fetuses.

What a bizarre decision.

I'd say Vice needs to stop stepping on their dicks, but as far as I can tell, that's their brand now.

There's a certain Tankie farmer who would approve of this.

What the absolute fark is wrong with him? and Vice?

Family of some of the people whose final picture was colorized actually requested this...so you guys might want to pause before  jumping on the outrage bandwagon...

Shotgun Justice: What the absolute fark is wrong with him? and Vice?

Vice has lost a bit of its edgelord proclivities since they bounced Gavin "Stickin' A Dildo Up My Ass To Own the Libs" McInnes, but they're still there.

Whats the problem? The guy in the photo looks happy.

2021-04-11 9:25:49 AM
I've been to Cambodia. The entire nation has been traumatized. They fought a Khmer Rouge driven civil war up until the middle 90s and that vibe is still there. This exercise in changing the expression of people who were actually about to be executed is beyond war porn. It's truly sick.

Just think of it as the visual equivalent of setting a video to "Yakkety Sax".

My fault this could have been phrased clearer...i was refering to the expressions and this specific defense was used by him in a personal tweet on the subject...mind you...he could be engaging in CYA but that will come out fast enough should he be lying.

I'm sure there's a good reason for someone to do this...

And if the intent was to give families of these victims who might not have a photo of their relatives a photo that might show them happy, why leave the prisoner tag on and the grim concentration camp background?  If you're going to remove the photo from the brutality of the situation, go all the way.

Saw some crap like this in a Montana photo group on the book face. It's one thing to colorize a photo, but good God, she was driven from her homeland by the white man, most of her family dead, and you give her a big farking grin?

I've been to S-21 and seen the killing fields. I can guarantee no one was smiling there. fark this guy.

Wine Sipping Elitist: Whats the context of this? What are the pictures of?

The original pictures were of people murdered by a Communist regime.

So yeah, making them into happy smiling people is pretty horrifying. Sort of like photo shopping smiles onto Jews getting marched to the gas chambers.

This I could understand. But yeah, if that's the case, completely take all evidence of the situation they were in away. And that would be a thing for the family, not something shared with the public as some sort of horrific art project.

Also, he altered photos of women prisoners in Australia from the 1920s to have smiles too.  Is his excuse that their families asked him to do this also?
