This was to me, mysteriously, the most disturbing thing about the article

And if you know anything about 311, he was likely smoking a bowl when he got there.

He probably has the same social media issues as Matt Gertz. Though probably not as much hate.

I thought the law was that you could smoke weed wherever you could legally smoke cigarettes, except while driving. Technically you're not allowed to smoke or vape in city parks or beaches.

It is illegal to smoke cigarettes or marijuana in any of the City parks.

I am hoping that another ancillary benefit of legalization would be the actual enforcement of this rule. But that would require effort by the NYPD, so that's not going to happen.

As a Michigander, where it has been legal for a little while now, let me tell you: I'd rather allow smoking weed in outdoor parks than what we have got instead, which is a whole lot of people smoking it while driving. That's impaired driving, and I'm none-too-fond of people who endanger others like that. It's the same as driving with a beer in hand.

People are stupid about this. We won. Weed's legal. Now stop doing all the reckless stuff with it, follow the laws and rules like any other smoker or drinker, and don't give the other side the leverage to get this undone. It can still be re-criminalized, folks. BEHAVE. Smoke your weed at home, or in places where it's legal to do so. Not while driving. Not in Walmart. Not outside of Walmart. Not in the church or school parking lot. Be smart and don't make it easier for the anti-weed people to take this away from you.

Unless you WANT to go back to the days of being thrown in jail for it. Do you want that? Because that could happen if you're not smart about it.

Beautiful Disaster is awesome.

Also NYC should really back off on the hole smoking prohibition thing.  Like someone upthread mentioned cigs in parks.

Yall are charing over 100% more on cigarettes in straight taxes. Jesus encourage people to smoke. Means you'll have thousands of people at least paying $8 a day in straight tax. (Always made sure to bring a carton with me when I had to work in NY, Chicago or Cali)

What these people who got the cops called on them in Brooklyn did was technically against the law as I understand it; you can't smoke in parks in New York City.  But nobody's going to get arrested for smoking weed in a park there now that the stuff is legal, and I seriously doubt that anyone's even going to get cited for it, or at least not in the immediate post-legalization phase that NY is in now.

So the legislature in Albany has, among other things, not only effectively legalized weed use in previously smoke-free public spaces, they've effectively *re-legalized* tobacco use in those spaces.  Just f**king brilliant, and a huge contribution to the improvement of the quality of life, I'm sure.

When I lived in NH, a co-worker would ask me to buy him 3 cartons of smokes whenever I'd go into the regional office in NJ. At the time, I could get them for about $30 each, but in NJ where the office was, they cost almost double that. If he was in NY, they were more than double. I picked him up a bunch when I was at a golf event at an Indian casino resort, no state taxes on them. Don't know if he still smokes. I quit long ago ('96). I still have dreams sometimes where I am smoking.

Legal weed may be coming to VA by around 2023. Don't think I'll smoke it, but edibles sound like a good idea. I think I'll need to make sure when I retire it is somewhere I can legally get some.

Actually, it's illegal to smoke cigarettes in parks in NYC.  The law is that you're allowed to smoke weed wherever you can legally smoke cigarettes.

Thus, I am forced to side with 311 caller.  Smoking weed in the park is still illegal.

They could always just stand on a corner and it'd be fine.

Is this a Midwest/East Coast problem? West Coast people know to keep it indoors. There's a dispensary within walking distance in every direction but the only time I've even gotten a whiff of it was from red staters in a parking lot. Public tobacco smokers here get death glares so that's probably part of it.

The cops were not arresting anyone for smoking cigarettes in NYC parks. The most they can do is hand out a citation with a $50 fine as the penalty. They can not make an arrest for smoking in the park.

The tax provides a lot of job opportunities for organized crime to smuggle in cigs from VA, that's for certain. I think it's something like 60% of cigs sold in NYC came from cartons with VA tax stamps.

As a medical marijuana user, if you walk around in public smoking a blunt I hope you die of lung cancer from the wraps you use to roll it. The last thing anyone needs is to constantly smell this disgusting garbage and having it blasted in the faces of children.

DeBlasio is a piece of shiat and this whole legalization should have banned combustible smoking. It makes absolutely 0 sense to allow combustion of cannabis products as it is both harmful and an olfactory nuisance.
