My favorite Madden'ism - "when you talk about guys like him, he's one of the guys you talk about"

My friends and I just looked at each other, "WTF?"

The team that scores the most points by the end of the game wins.

I remember when he announced his retirement from coaching.

Say what you will about the man, but Madden would have never been one of the hijackers on 9/11...

I loved how all he used that yellow pen for was to circle the sweat stains on the offensive linemen.

Is this his swan song send off? I always liked the guy, unlike Chris Berman.

My aunt is extremely afraid of flying as well...based on a bad experience in South America.

I jokingly told her she has "John Madden Syndrome".

You see that sweat on his butt, that's how you know he's working. - John Madden.

John Madden wouldn't exist today as an announcer in the nfl. He would break down plays for you and show the replay. Now, they have so many commercials forced in to a game it's no longer a joke about commercial-kick off-commercial-first down-commercial.

He was on the cover of several Sonic the Hedgehog games but it just confused and upset people so they changed it to the little blue animal instead

My dad and I used to eat shiat like that up and would laugh and say "there's still time on the clock" and "they don't have to get it all back at once" when there's 5 seconds and you're down by 15 to make fun of all the obvious announcers
"Not the play they were looking for"

Still always amazed me how he retired.

He was in broadcasting, for what, 30 or 40 years?  And just all of a sudden, in an offseason, just quietly announces he's retiring and he's never been seen or heard from again.  And it's been almost 14 years.  Hard to believe he's been retired for that long.

No sendoff, no fanfare for a sendoff... and no 'Hey, yeah, I'm still here!' interviews or anything.  Just... gone.

But, I assume, loving life and enjoying the company of his grandkids.

"You know, Pat, if you don't score more points than the other team it's hard to win the football game!"
"Right you are, John."

He still gets interviewed by local media all the time. Especially with the raiders moving and the recent Jim Harbaugh stuff. His football watching parties are almost legendary because of the food.

Looks like he made it all the way through to the Playstation/N64 era. Madden 2001 was the first athlete cover (Eddie George).

My favorite John Madden moment was a Sunday afternoon game, coming out of commercial they showed the blimp and he said he and the blimp were both going from Dallas (I think) to California for the Monday night game the next day.  Pat or whoever was with him that day asked who would get there first, John's bus or the blimp.  John spent an inordinate amount of time discussing it.  Coming out of the next break they showed the same wide angle but the blimp wasn't in the shot.  John claimed that the blimp left early to get a head start.  He used his telestrator to circle where the blimp used to be, and spent an inordinate amount of time discussing it.

He always seemed like such a huge fan of the NFC East. Probably because CBS and Fox had him on so many of their games.  When the Bears, Packers and 49ers were good, he'd pull for them. But there was a different zest for the everyone in the East. Except the Cardinals, when they were in that division.
Madden's love for Brett Favre is legendary, though I'd swear Gruden hyped him up more. But don't forget how much Madden loved LT and Reggie White and the Dallas Triplets.
One of my favorites was a bit he did on KNBR in San Fransisco the day after the Barry Switzer Cowboys took apart the Jimmy Johnson Dolphins in Miami. Troy Aikmen had a huge game and Madden was going on and on and on about how great Aikmen was, how accurate he was, went to say he'd never seen a quarterback more in control of an offense or more accurate or with better timing. The KNBR host then asked, "John, what about Joe Montana?"
"Oh, yeah, he was good, too". Then back to praising Aikmen.

But, in their heyday, Summerall and Madden were far better than Shoepisser and Aikmen.

I remember somebody remixed his old football coverage in a way that sounded like euphemisms. My google fu is weak though, so I can't find it.
