That is sad to say the least.
Well, at least the blue flies and the worst of the smell is gone.

The Japanese have a word for this. Kodokushi (孤独死) or lonely death.

Ehh...if you're dead for nine years & you had kids, something tells me you were an asshole that no one wanted anything to do with.

Based on the description, I suspect the actual problem is that he wan't late on anything. Probably had every basic amenity set to automatic payment. The caretaker was there to handle some minor routine issue, not evict a delinquent tenant.

Don't you think you'd check on your father if he was someone that was actually good to you?

If you let your father go, it's probably because he was an asshole.

Right. There was a mention of his bills being paid electronically and automatically every month.

Stories like this are one of the reasons I don't have my rent set to auto-pay. Though the main reason is that I like to look things over before paying a bill of that magnitude, but this is also a consideration.

30 years ago, he wouldn't have his bills being auto-paid so would have been discovered much sooner when he didn't pay his bills

I'm kind of amazed he wasn't found sooner due to mail, if I didn't check my mail for only a couple of weeks my mailbox would be full and the postman would probably pull my mail and eventually mark my property vacant which would bounce all the mail coming in.

His pension was stopped in 2018 when the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) could not get in touch with him but his bills continued to be paid automatically from his bank account.

The article linked from TFA (Google Translate for those who don't read Norwegian) says he owned the apartment. So mortgage and/or property tax, not rent, and it seems he wasn't behind after all.

/Did no one notice the smell?

"A man lay dead in his Oslo flat for nine years before being discovered by a caretaker in December, Norwegian police have said.

"He was found only when the caretaker requested police open the apartment so he could carry out maintenance work."

That is either the most overworked caretaker in the history of the world or the absolute laziest.

How many maintenance requests came from that unit over the last 9 years?

Unless there was something like a leaking pipe or a safety inspection, it would be up to the owner to schedule stuff.

I expect that to happen to me.  Except my bank account will only last about a year, 18 months at most.  That's assuming I drop dead before this pandemic crap ends.

In the past five years, I think I've made one maintenance request.  I do have one I need to make, but I'm waiting until after I get vaccinated.

I've seen kids stop communicating with their parents because they stopped spoon-feeding them, usually after the enabling parent passes away and the remaining parent tells them to grow up.

Asshole is as asshole does. Not everyone with mental issues is an asshole, but if mental issues make you an asshole, the excuse doesn't change the result.

That said, if he had kids and no one noticed he died for 9 years, someone in that relationship was an asshole.

If you kept collecting your paycheck (pension) and didn't have to buy groceries, would the accumulated surplus after 6-7 years float you for at least another 3?

Not necessarily. It really depends on the conditions inside the appartment. Very low humidity for example could lead to mummification as opposed to normal decay.

Certainly not all of them, but enough that the group gets painted with a broad brush.  I don't know of many mental health issues that ever get cured.  Their sufferers are taught to deal with it, but a significant number of those people never want to learn and everyone else is made to suffer for it.

That is what I took it as, too. Every apartment I have been in had the maintenance man in my apartment at least once a year just doing routine inspections on various things.
