It's not a record. Shiat, I remember a theater near where I grew up that had a dedicated screen to midnight showings of Rocky Horror every Saturday night for years. The theater owner just bought a 35mm print.

It's only weekly.  When 2001: A Space Odyssey came out, it played at the Hollywood for well over a year IIRC.
Deep Throat played at the Aladdin for several years in the '70s, I think, before the VCR revolution.  Old neighborhood theaters.  Used to live within walking distance of four of them in different directions.

I saw this just about every Saturday I was in San Diego and not on duty.  IIRC the theater was close to a really great pizza place - Perry's, now Square Pizza.

In high school, I lived near(ish) a theater that played Rocky Horror every Saturday night like this place. I like the movie fine on its own, I guess, but it really is fun to see it with a theater full of people that dress up and know all the jokes and bits and have maybe invented a few of their own. If you haven't gone to one, I'd recommend it.

I'd say it doesn't count if it wasn't full audience. No movie does really, but this one in particular definitely doesn't count without the full experience. I could play the movie every night at home, it doesn't constitute a streak to anyone but myself.

\Also, I liked that Columbia until I noticed her blond bun hanging out of the wig, just lazy
\\you don't know how good it can be until you go to a big showing, like the one at Harvard Yard's movie theater
\\\now THAT was a fun night

This. Until you see it live, you don't get it.

\this from someone who may or may not have lied and told his BFF it wasn't his first time seeing it live so he wouldn't get the virgin treatment

I am assuming "invitations to parties" is another one

i keed Rocky Horror is just fun.  That's it.  There isn't anything deeper than that.  Growing up in the 80's the cheap single screen theater in town would show it every Saturday night.  We'd go and just have fun singing with everyone that had seen it 20 times.

The same theater had a yearly Lash Larue film festival.

Watched Rocky Horror once.

I fully understand the cult status of certain films.  Don't quite get the cult status of that one.  Growing up, it was a bit like a Halloween thing at local theatres, with people really getting into the costumes.  I'd walk by the lineups on my way to buy beer sometimes.  It seemed like an excuse to party for goths, just like Star Wars for nerds.

Whatever works for you, I guess.

This is precisely my view.  I just don't get why people like it. I don't think it fits in the "so bad it's good" camp like Road House.  It's just bad.

If you're watching Rocky at home, by yourself, you won't get it.

If you're at the theater, with a good crowd, you'll probably get it.

If you're young, questioning yourself, your kinks and sexuality, and you see Rocky in a theater with a good crowd, you'll feel as if all the weight in the world has been lifted from your shoulders. You'll leave feeling better than you ever have.

The original Star Wars ran for more than a year in the local theater.

My local theater had it playing every Saturday night around 11. The McDonalds would stay open late to pick up the after theater crowd.

First time I saw it was my lost year before college, and one of the colleges was showing it in the on campus cinema/stage auditorium. I hung out with a bunch of guys in a big nerd band. About 2/3 of us had dates, I did not.

Some farking assholes in a Vega drove by us just getting out of parked cars just farking nailed a pair of sisters my friends were dating. I raged out, saw they were going to hit an intersection and had to turn left left. I hauled my giant, much less fat ass across the road, hopped a low chain link fence, cut down through an alley and ran out into the road right as they made the turn. I was roaring trying to open the door or rip the closing window off. Man, the look on those likely harmless assholes was a terrified sight to see.

We all got lucky they didn't forget to lock the manual door locks and got that window closed. I would have murdered those two or gotten beaten to death by campus cops while trying. I was a townie, and they were likely townies too. I was a weird, scary kid back then, but big and hot tempered. I'm glad I didn't hurt anyone besides myself, now, and thankful I wasn't arrested.

When they'd managed to get away from a dangerous pedestrian in their steelbox, I accepted the fact, and turned around to look for my friends. There was a theater full of costumed weirdos standing in line waiting for the theater to open and all of them were silently gawping at me as I found the end of the line to hold places for my friends. I was a bit too keyed up to enjoy the start of the movie.

Now, I'd like to get really high and watch it with a crowd of weirdos. I'm owed. Post Covid, maybe I'll get to. Y'all can toss water balloons all y'all want if you smoke me out first. 30 years later, I'm kinda harmless. Nowadays, that town is chewed up by a few recessions, and I'd likely get shot for trying that shiat.

I can't imagine Rocky Horror outside of October.  It'd be like watching Christmas Vacation in June.

2021-04-10 10:28:24 PM
I went to the movie theater in high school to see this. I went with a few other people in the marching band. They convinced me to dress up as a character, which was fine. I don't remember much from the night, nor how I got there or what I told my mom.

I was uptight in high school when it came to being made fun of.

So I do remember being terrified to indicate to anybody that I was a "virgin" and luckily none of my bandmates cared enough to out me.

I wish I had participated more since a couple years later I would do a stint with the "freak" crowd and realize how uptight I had been.
