enry: Conservatism is cool only if you think that rich white men deserve to be wealthy.

Thank you, for one of the best comments in the past few days!  How very true. In my case I think they don't deserve at all to be wealthy!

"Hey guys, you know what's really edgy and countercultural? Reaffirming the same social structure we've had for hundreds of years and never letting anyone change anything ever! Most people don't have the balls to be completely conventional."

Conservatism was cool for the first 16 months of Reagan's first term. By which point baby boomers figured out that they weren't going to get wealthy on Wall Street investments and derivatives, and had to settle for selling lawn mowers at Sears.

It's hard to consider a podcast cool when you talk about killing black people and hispanic people and middle eastern people all the time.

Back in the day with Alex P. Keaton, that sort of thing. Reaganism was super-cool among Yuppies, which the general media adored and was picked up by way too many Americans.

After George W. Bush was elected, the general meda pushed for a massive "everybody loves Republicans now" thing, despite the guy losing the popular vote and stealing the presidency. We got NASCAR up the ass and Rush Limbaugh hired by ESPN to comment on the NFL. We got Jeff Foxworthy elevated as a master comedian.

We get this shiat shoved on us way too often.

Well, if you think the modern democratic party has anything to do with conservatism, you're obviously having a stroke. Or just a troll.

"White Metal" - The goddamned Christians tried to yoink the sound of black metal as their own, but worship jeebus instead of bashing christianity with it. Just like everything else, for millennia, try to steal whatever someone else came up with as their own to recruit more followers.

I listen to a lot of popular podcasts, but none of them try to make liberalism cool.  They often point out problems with society, and the flaws in addressing them, but it's not like they start by claiming Conservatism is flawed.  Though usually their conservative guests helps get them there.

2021-04-10 2:47:33 PM
What part is supposed to be cool? The kicking people when they're down instead of helping them up? The being scared of people who are attracted to people they think they shouldn't be? The pants-pissing because some people fleeing bad situations might want to come here? The rejection of objective reality and science? The gaslighting their own family? The wanton ratf__king of the planet so their grandchildren will live in a far less pleasant place, or not get to live a full life at all? The being scared of every new idea anyone ever brings up?

I mean... right-wing radio talk shows aren't exactly new or newsworthy.

The only notable thing here is that apparently the right wing is so utterly farking lacking in even the slightest talent or savvy that it took them a full half of a decade after The Ringer/Pod Save America had already become massively successful to even think of making a half-assed knockoff of it.

// Not the idea of "have a right wing podcast" in general, I mean the specific idea of the hosts being actual experts with experience in the field of politics and focusing most of the production on analytical discussion between those experts rather than focusing on interviews.  Which isn't in itself a wildly new idea, Pfeiffer et al basically just adapted how cable-news punditry worked already, moved to an audio format, and made it actually reliably somewhat professional and technical instead of a bunch of know-nothing idiots jerking each other off.

I'm sometimes amazed, and disturbed, at how the conservative Republicans I know find punching downward at those less fortunate is funny.

I mean, I'd point out that Turning Point USA, a group similarly tasked with reaching out the youth and making being a Republican cool again, was co-founded by this hip young guy:

There are extremely few politicians that are considered 'cool'. In fact, in current American politics, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is AOC. And like her, 'cool' politics are pretty much universally on the left.

It's quite convenient to simply redefine "conservative" so you don't have to accept that the contemporary democratic party has been consistently dragged to the right, ever since they completely wet themselves following the 1968 election cycle.

I have no problem with a white guy being wealthy (some people actually have brilliant ideas and work their asses off), I just have a problem with those same people influencing the system to close the door on everyone else.
