The UK is occupying the Northern part of the island country of Ireland, they don't want to give it up. There are factions inside Northern Ireland who want to stay as a part of the UK, and some who want to unite with the Republic of Ireland.

Both factions cooled off after the good friday accords, which basically treated Northern Ireland (the UK part) as part of Ireland proper. This was mostly accomplished by allowing free passage between the areas.

Brexit screwed all that up. Ireland is part of the EU, and the UK isn't. There will be a hard border (checkpoints, inspections, customs) put up. The question is: does that border go between N. Ireland and Ireland, or N. Ireland and the UK.

The fighting is because the answer matters to people. Deeply.

Dude, let's keep American politics to American threads. I don't think we need to intrude any further than we already have.

This is a real problem that they are going to have to resolve.

Dad was a British Army soldier stationed there at the start of the troubles in the late 60s to early 70s. Got hit in the face with a brick.

This Is a fustercluck, and predicted by many. They've sacrificed the Good Friday Agreement in order to Brexit, so they've cut their nose off to ... cut their heads off.

And they've made it illegal to protest in the streets.

The Irish Brigade under Bonnie Prince Charlie would fit the bill.

The Troubles have always been as much about economics and opportunity as they have been about religion.  The Good Friday accords made the economics irrelevant by making regional economic borders irrelevant,

Brexit blithely made them relevant again.

Back and forth invasions?

The English invaded Ireland and treated it as vacant farmland for their own use, exporting beef and grain to England while the Irish starved to death.  To my knowledge the Irish never invaded England.

I've been over there a lot, as I've said in other threads about Northern Ireland. I love it there.
There's a tendency to romanticize the violence and the "struggle" on both sides.
I'm from Los Angeles. The 3600 people who have died in the thirty plus years during the troubles is roughly two or three years worth of gang related violence in LA or Chicago.

I think it's a Euro thing... we call them "Molotov" here in the states too, not "gas" bombs.

This is genuine and I don't understand. I know this community thinks of me as uniformed and stupid, a lot, and I play it up. But, this isn't that.

I was raised in rural America and watching these videos this last week I don't get it. If someone threw a molotov at 18 year old me or my property, my group would've come out shooting. Or with knives. Anything.

If you threw a firebomb my thoughts would be you are not going to stop until you kill me, my kids, my wife. I'm going to kill as many of you as possible while my family attempt to flee.

None of that is happening in these videos. It's like a sports match. Why?

I know this is hard for a rural American to understand, but life in other countries, even in other parts of America, goes on outside the view of the camera and goes on after the camera shuts off. In fact, the partisans of Northern Ireland have shown continuous and long term resolve to get payback for any slight, violent, economic, or just perceived.

"Meanwhile, outlawed armed groups continue to operate as criminal drug gangs and still exert influence in working-class communities - though the main paramilitaries have denied involvement in the recent unrest."

This probably has more to do with this than sectarian politics. They do not care for the hard Brexit border

why don't they just *not* put up a hard border

putting up a hard border takes effort

not putting up a hard border takes zero effort

You can have Brexit or you can have peace in Ireland, but don't get both.

I remember being told how wrong I was by a "Family Guy" themed novelty account who totally was not a mod endorsed troll driving up page clicks.

I was in Northern Ireland just before the Brexit vote in 2019 and had a loyalist cabbie who was just gushing about how good it was gonna be for "his people" to be free of the European yoke.

He was also a big fan of Trump and told me that we were gonna have him around for another four years.

I tipped him and told him that maybe I'd have to deal with Trump, maybe not, America was getting tired of him. But if Brexit happened the UK would put the hard border on the Britain, not between the Irelands. The cabbie got real quiet, got back in his car and drove off.

I wonder if he remembers me.
